  2. What is APARSEN? • A Network of Excellence in digital preservation • Funded by European Commission • 7th Framework Programme — Digital Libraries and Digital Preservation • Runs January 2011 to December 2014 (4 years) • Coordinated by Science and Technology Facilities Council (UK)

  5. Costs and benefits • Digital preservation costs money … • Potentially it costs a lot of money, over an undetermined timescale … • So it would be good to have some idea of how much money is required • … and of what that money is buying in terms of benefits • Trade-off costs vs. benefits

Why cost models? • A cost model is “a representation of the activity of digital preservation that can be shared, examined and critiqued and whose purpose is to shed light on the costs entailed in the activity of digital preservation” • To understand the costs of doing digital preservation • To make informed choices about investments

  7. Cost models and sustainability • Sustainability: the ability of digital preservation systems to continue their existence into the future • What costs must be incurred, and when? • Who carries out the activities that result in these costs? • Links to preservation services • Who pays the costs?

What APARSEN is doing • WP32 on cost modelling • D32.1 Report on cost parameters for digital repositories (under final revision) • D32.2 Report on testing of cost models and further analysis of cost parameters (in preparation) • WP36 on business cases • D36.1 Business preparedness report (under final revision) • D36.2 Exemplar business cases for each of the stakeholder groups (in preparation)
