  1. Ch. 7 The Battle Begins Timeless Truth – Faith is the victory.

  2. Where are we? • The wandering is over • Moses has died • Joshua has been appointed by God as the successor to Moses • God says prepare yourselves, my promise to you is about to take place

  3. Today’s Focus • Rahab • Read Joshua 2:1-24 at your table • What do you notice? • Does anything seem “out of place?” • Is there anything that seems confusing or just doesn’t make a lot of sense? • Does anything stick out as you read?

  4. Rahab: Woman of Flaws • Harlot/Prostitute – ALWAYS referred to this way – we never let her “baggage” go • She is a Canaanite through and through • Religion incorporated sexual immorality into worship • God’s plan was to eradicate ALL living in the land due to their immorality and flaws • Rahab’s name meant: “broad,” “insolence,” or “fierceness”

  5. Rahab: Woman of Flaws • The spies go to Rahab – but why? These are “holy men…” • Avoid being noticed • Information could be easily obtained • It was built into the city wall – quick escape • It was possibly an inn

  6. Rahab: Woman of Flaws • Let’s make a deal – Ch 2:14-21 • Our lives for yours • Be warned! If any venture outside your home, his blood will be on his own head, we will be guiltless • Leave this scarlet cord in the window • Scarlet has meaning • Cleansing – Ritual cleanings • Looking forward – Christ’s blood

  7. Rahab: Woman of Faith • Seems to be the smartest person in the story! • The spies were quickly found out • The king’s men believed her lie with ease

  8. Rahab: Woman of Faith • Confession of Faith – Ch. 2:8-13 • “I know that the LORD had given this land to you” • We heard about the Red Sea, what happened in Egypt, what you did to the Amorite kings… • “For the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below…”

  9. Rahab: Woman of Faith • Rahab ends up settling with Israel and marries into the family • She is great-great-grandmother to King David • She is in direct line with Jesus (Matthew 1:5) • Hebrews 11:31 – She is a “heroine” of faith! • James uses her as an example of an outward expression of inward faith – James 2:25

  10. Implications and Applications • Salvation is available to all by faith • One can be saved, but still surrounded by the sin of one’s culture • God’s goodness transcends cultures and peoples • God’s plan to include gentiles by faith was present from the beginning

  11. Implications and Applications • God’s past work provides bases for our faith in what He will do in the future • God saves the “unlikely” sinner and therefore we should not judge whether or not someone may come to faith • God raises up the lowliest
