  1. Chemical Equations The 5 main types

  2. Quick Review Balance the following reaction: (Remember you need the same number on both sides of the equation) __ Al2S3 + __ HCl  __ AlCl3 + __ H2S 1 6 3 2

  3. The 5 main types Look at your rainbow balancing ladder, the green sheet… ___ Br2 + ___ K  ___ KBr  ___ Al + ___ O2 ___ Al2O3 Notice how on the left side there are two elements and on the right side there is only one product

  4. The 5 main types This type of reaction is called a Synthesis reaction ___ Br2 + ___ K  ___ KBr  A + B  AB Two things coming together to make one. (boy meets girl  couple)

  5. Ex 1: • Ex 2: ___ Al + ___ O2 ___ Al2O3 ___ Fe + ___ S  ___ FeS

  6. The 5 main types Now turn to the pink sheet… look at these reactions ___ Sb4O6 ___ Sb + ___ O2 ___ FeBr3 ___ Fe + ___ Br2 Notice how on the left side there is just one reactant and on the right side there are two elements (products)

  7. The 5 main types This type of reaction is called a Decomposition reaction ___ Sb4O6 ___ Sb + ___ O2 AB  A + B One thing breaking up into smaller parts. (couple  boy and girl)

  8. Ex 1: • Ex 2: ___ FeBr3 ___ Fe + ___ Br2 ____ H2O  ____ H2 + ____O2

  9. The 5 main types Now turn to the yellow sheet… look at these reactions ___ZnCl2 + ___ H2 ___ HCl + ___ Zn ___ Al + ___ FeO  ___ Al2O3 + ___ Fe Notice how on the each side there is one compound and one element.

  10. The 5 main types This type of reaction is called a Single replacement reaction ___ZnCl2 + ___ H2 ___ HCl + ___ Zn AB + C  CB+ A One element switching places with another. (couple + outsider  new couple and new outsider)

  11. Ex 1: • Ex 2: ___ Al + ___ FeO  ___ Al2O3 + ___ Fe ___ Mg + ___ HBr  ___ MgBr2 + ___ H2

  12. The 5 main types Now turn to the final blue sheet… look at these reactions ___ ZnS + ___ AlP  ___ Zn3P2 + ___ Al2S3 ___ Al(OH)3 + ___ HF  ___ AlF3 + ___ HOH Notice how on the each side there are two compounds and that they switch partners.

  13. The 5 main types This type of reaction is called a Double replacement reaction __ ZnS + __ AlP  __ Zn3P2 + __ Al2S3 AB + CD  AD + CB Two elements switching places with another. (A and C switching places… Zn & Al switched spots)

  14. Ex 1: • Ex 2: ___ Al(OH)3 + ___ HF  ___ AlF3 + ___ HOH __ Mg(NO3)2 + __ KBr  __ MgBr2 + __ KNO3

  15. The 5 main types Now for the final type… look at these reactions ___ CH4 + ___ O2 ___ CO2 + ___ H2O ___ C2H8 + ___ O2 ___ CO2 + ___ H2O Notice how on the left side there is a Carbon Hydrogen compound and oxygen gas that make carbon dioxide and water.

  16. The 5 main types This type of reaction is called a Combustion reaction ___ CH4 + ___ O2 ___ CO2 + ___ H2O CH + O2 CO2+ H2O Products are always just CO2 and H2O.

  17. Ex 1: • Ex 2: ___ C2H8 + ___ O2 ___ CO2 + ___ H2O __ C6H12O6 + ___ O2 ___ CO2 + ___ H2O

  18. The 5 main types; synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion Classify the following reaction types: SnO2 + H2  Sn + H2O Single replacement Al + O2  Al2O3 Synthesis SiCl4 + H2O  SiO2 + HCl Double replacement C3H8 + O2  CO2 + H2O Combustion NO3  N2 + O2 Decomposition Zn + HCl  ZnCl2 + H2 Single replacement
