  3. Responsibility to owners of the business Ensure that profits are being maximized Ensure that the organisation meets its goals Ensure that the organisation is run efficiently (no wastage) Inform owners of any changes that need to be made

  4. Responsibility to employees of the business Provide adequate working conditions Provide adequate training Maintain good communication and human relations with employees Acknowledge good performance by employees Provide adequate remuneration (pay) and other incentives Provide opportunities for promotion Encourage loyalty Provide a way to address grievances (problems) And more

  5. Responsibility to customers Provide items or service of good quality Determine reasonable prices Provide truthful information Provide after-sales services (e.g. Repairs, return policy, opportunity to express satisfaction or dissatisfaction, deal with complaints) Honour all warranties and guaranties.

  6. Responsibility to society Fair trading practices Ensure that the environment is not damaged Support social causes

  7. Responsibility to Government Abide by the laws of the land Pay taxes, make tax deductions from the salaries of employees Contribute to the welfare of society e.g. Reducing unemployment

  9. FOOTBALL LEAGUE EXAMPLE To demonstrate all the functions of management, the example of setting up a new football league in Tobago will be used. Functions of management: Planning Organising Staffing Leading Motivating Controlling

  10. Planning The management function concerned with defining goals for the organisation’s future performance and the tasks and resources needed to achieve them.

  11. WHAT GOALS?

  12. Planning for the football league Community leaders come together and decide on the basics, like What type of league (male, female, age groups) When it will happen Who will be involved What kind of prizes will be given What other activities to be involved in (e.g. Community clean ups)

  13. Organising The bringing together of all the resources needed to meet the organisation’s goals. It involves : Designing a structure assigning duties and responsibilities Determining workflow Establishing schedules Providing raw materials, technology & skills

  14. Organising the football league Develop fixtures for the games (a schedule of when matches take place and which teams will play on those days) Decide where the matches will be played (what fields) Identify the officials and other labour needed Decide on the rules and procedures Obtain necessary equipment Assign tasks to persons to ensure success

  15. Staffing The function involved with filling vacancies with the right people. It involves recruiting persons and developing their skills subsequently.

  16. Staffing the football league Persons may volunteer for free or be hired for wages Some would be placed in leadership/supervisory positions Others will be placed in subordinate positions They must be trained to improve on their skills, so they can be sent to short courses and workshops.

  17. Leading (aka directing) This function involves getting people to perform their assigned tasks willingly, efficiently and effectively. The leader directs others towards attaining the organisation’s goals.

  18. Leadership in the football league The leaders would be the organisers, the team captains and the officials. Excellent communication from leader to leader, and from leader to subordinate is of utmost importance to the smooth running of the football league. There must be clear lines of authority and responsibility (an organisational chart would be beneficial).

  19. Motivating The process by which workers are influenced to take the right actions to get the task done. It inspires workers to do their best.

  20. Motivation in the football league Prizes Recognition Promotion to another league e.g. National league Other incentives

  21. Controlling (aka coordinating) This function involves establishing performance standards, monitoring actual performance and comparing to those standards, determining whether the organisation is on track with its goals and making corrections when necessary.

  22. Controlling the football league Referees to ensure rules are followed Rewards Punishment/penalties
