Initial Efforts Reported In Discussion During August 8, 2013 Cal/Val Telecon

  • Baseline – MX7.1 CrIMSS EDR LaRC offline code

  • Tested an updated CLIM LUT with updated covariance matrix, eof, background for 12 HP, 15 HP, and 16 HP

  • Tested using data date 05/15/2012, 107 granules

    • Did not see improvement in convergence rates, statistics (RMS, stddev, bias), or IR+MW chisq

    • Decided that a larger data set may be needed

  • Tested using data date 09/20/2012, 2696 granules

    • Targeted reduction of IR+MW chisq values over desert land

  • Tested new 16 HP setup with new 1st guess IR emissivity and reflectivity values over land

    • A six-year monthly average of IASI data was provided by Dan Zhou

      Feedback/Recommendations

  • Hold to first guess and performance looks better – Eric Maddy

  • After cloud clearing MW surface performance so poor. Cloud clearing over desert is poor. Pull out clear footprints, turn off cloud clearing. – Evan Fishbein

  • Turn off emissivity retrieval – Sung-Yung Lee

  • During validation of AIRS (Oklahoma site), restricted retrievals to those that agree and RMS statistics of H2O in boundary layer improved. Have a validation data set, start with Nick’s sondes. – Bob Knuteson
