  1. Tenses in Italian All you’ve ever wanted to know about present, past and future, but never dared to ask!

  2. Verbs ending in -are -ere -ire -ire (irregular) -isco -isce -ite isci -iamo -iscono Take off the ending and add: io tu lui noi voi loro -o -i -a -iamo -ate -ano -o -i -e -iamo -ete -ono -o -i -e -iamo -ite -ono present

  3. past • Just like in French, some verbs take “to have” and some take “to be” as their auxiliary (unlike English, which only takes “to have”). Good news is, it’s the same verbs that take “to be” as in French (more or less).

  4. To have avere io ho tu hai lui/lei ha noi abbiamo voi avete loro hanno

  5. -are e.g guardare (to watch) -ere e.g vedere (to see) -ire e.g finire -ato guardato --uto veduto -ito finito then transform the verb to get a past participle

  6. I have watched you have seen they have finished Try these: He has talked (parlare) We have prefered (preferire) I have sold (vendere) (io) ho guardato (tu) hai veduto (loro) hanno finito Now put them together!

  7. answers (lui) ha parlato (noi) abbiamo preferito (io) ho venduto Easy peasy! Of course, there are irregulars, otherwise life wouldn’t be fun!

  8. Verbs with “to be” essere (io) sono (tu) sei (lui) è (noi) siamo (voi) siete (loro) sono

  9. Venire Andare Nascere Scendere Entrare Cadere Tornare (ritornare) Arrivare Morire Partire (see p. 216 for the full list) As for the way you change them, they work exactly the same (-ato, -uto, -ito), but they need to agree with the subject (e.g we left = siamo partiti) They’re just the same as the Mrs VanderTramp

  10. Bere  bevuto Decidere  deciso Dire  detto Essere  sono stato Fare  fatto Leggere  letto Prendere  preso Scegliere  scelto Scrivere  scritto Spendere  speso Vedere  visto Irregular past participles

  11. Future verbs are even easier! Just take off the ending (-are, -ere, -ire) Verbs in –are and –ere verbs in -ire (io) -erò -irò (tu) -erai -irai (lui) -erà -irà (noi) -eremo -iremo (voi) -erete -irete (loro) -eranno -iranno

  12. I will watch  guarderò We will listen  ascolteremo He will finish  finirà etc…

  13. Most notable exceptions bere (ho bevuto) bere (bevo) bere (berrò) avere (ho, hai,...) avere (avrò) dire (ho detto) dire (dico, dici, …) essere (sono stato) essere (sono, sei, …) essere (sarò) fare (ho fatto) fare (faccio, fai, …) fare (farò) leggere (ho letto) uscire (esco, esci, …) vedere (ho visto) vedere (vedrò) venire (sono venuto) venire (vengo, vieni, …) venire (verrò) For the full list, refer to p. 225. There are rather a lot of irregular verbs in Italian (that’s the one difficult bit in this language), so if you’re trying to make a tense from scratch with the infinitive, it’s worth checking in that list first. past present future
