  1. Hardwood Flooring: Everything You Need To Know

  2. Hardwood flooring has been a part of home construction for many years now. Its design, durability and functionality have made it one of the most preferred forms of flooring. Let us first take a look at some of the basic information related to hardwood:

  3. Length-Long hardwoods have fewer joints and endpoints. To give a spacious feeling to a small room, shorter strips of hardwood can be used. • Width- 6-inch width planks have a rustic appeal. But they can get wide open during the dry period. • Hardness- Dents and nicks are proportional to the hardness of the surface. • Thickness- The thickness of the solid boards allows them to be refinished up to 10 times. If you give factory-finished coatings, the floor will not require frequent refinishing.

  4. Now, let us understand the grading system in hardwood. • Rustic- Rustic species have different characteristics from hardwood. • Natural-This can have some defects in grading. • Sorting in mills- Mills sort out the defects and hardwood with fewer defects is more expensive.

  5. Do you know about the different cuts of hardwood? If not, take a look at the list below: • Flatsawn- The growth rings of this type of board are roughly perpendicular to the grain pattern. • Quartersawn- Here the growth rings and straight grains are perpendicular to the face of the board. These boards are comparatively more expensive.

  6. How do you decide which type of hardwood is suitable for each area? Just read on to find out: • Basement- This area is prone to water damage, so, engineered hardwood floors are the best option here. • Office and bedroom-Black walnut or black cherry wood(both are softwoods) are the best options for these areas. • Hall and kitchen- Hickory and oak are suitable for these areas that have a high footfall. • Bathrooms-Same as the basement, this space too is exposed to water and humidity, so, engineered hardwood is the most suited option here.

  7. Benefits of hardwood floors: • It has a moderate texture when standing on. But you have to take care that the floor has underlayment installations. If you install the flooring on concrete, you will experience rigidity and discomfort. • Hardwood floors are warmer than stones and less warm than carpets. During winter seasons, it controls the radiant heating system underfloor and thus can maintain the same temperature all through the year. • Hardwood floors can reduce vibrations or hollow sounds, thus improving the acoustics inside the home.

  8. These floors are a great long-term investment if maintained properly. But before installing them, make sure you get in touch with a reputed hardwood supplier who provides quality materials.
