  2. Intro • Welcome to the brand new uwmedstudents.com! Our new site has beautiful, easy to use, and powerful tools for our student organizations powered by Wordpress. • This document will give you directions on how to get started with a new student org site and use some of the features of this software. 3. Creating a Site • Click the register link on the top of the homepage or the create blog Ilink on the Student Organizations page. If you are already logged in, click on Create a site under My sites. • Fill in the info. • The email will contain a link to login to the “Dashboard” which is the backend of your site that you will be using to control and edit your site. 4. Homepage Your site will look something like this: Wordpress has two types of content: Pages and Posts. Pages are for static content that you usually don’t change much (info about your org). Posts are more for daily content (blog). In practice you can add the same content to a Page or Post. But they differ in where they appear on your page. Posts appear as a blog on your homepage. Pages appear on the menu. menu/ pages Sidebar widgets Posts/ blog UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  5. Settings The first thing you should do is go to Appearance > Verto Theme Options Here you can edit the title of your site (custom text) or add your own logo (Logo Image). Edit the rest of the info on this screen to your liking UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  6. Menus By default, the menu of your site (which appears under your header) lists the Pages of your site (more on this later). You can easily customize this and add drop down menus by going to Appearance > Menus First add a menu by clicking the + button. Then choose that menu in the Theme Locations drop down box. Now you can add any page to the menu and reorder them as you wish. To make your menu’s drop down, just slide a bar to the right and it will become a submenu to the page above it. 7. Sidebars and Footers • Each Page or Post has a sidebar on the right side and a footer on the bottom. You can add different types of dynamic content to these areas to enhance your site. • Go to Appearance > Widgets. Then drag a widget you like to the area you want it to appear. There are many different widgets so explore and add them as you wish! • By default, there are two widgets on the primary sidebar and a widget in the Footer Widget Area 3 to fill in with your org info. Just click on the drop down arrows to open up the widjets and edit them. UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  8. Pages By default, your site will come with several pages for you to add info about your site. Click on one of these to go into the page editor and start typing content. Or you can delete any of these pages, rename them, etc (hover over the title of the page to bring up page options. Remember that they appear on your site’s menu bar. 9. Posts - Blogging Use posts to create a blog for your site. Post event announcements, interesting articles you find on the web, etc. By default, your blog comes with a welcome post. You can either edit it (hover over the title) or delete it and start a new post. Remember that posts appear on your homepage in a blog format. UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  10. Page/ Post Editor UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  11. Page/ Post Editor • Most of your time will be spent in the editor. This is a word document style editor that makes it easy to edit/ add new pages without knowing any code. Once you click add a new page/ post, or go to edit a page, you will be taken to this screen. • Some features of this screen: • Title: Add the title of your page, post here • Visual editor: The body of your page goes here. You can type text, copy paste images, and use the formatting tools on the top. • HTML editor: Use this to add code for things like YouTube videos (more on this later). • Discussion: By default, comments are turned off for any page or post. You can enable them in this box by checking the allow comments box. • Template: by default pages have a sidebar on the left side (configureable in the widgets section). If you have content that uses the entire page, select “Full-width”. • Media uploader: This is used to add any type of media (images, links to video, documents, pdfs etc. ). • Featured Image: You can upload a picture here to set as the picture for this post (optional). It is used in things such as the featured posts slider on the homepage. • Publish: Once you are satisfied with your post, click publish (or update if you are editing an old post). 12. Events Calendar • Go to www.uwmedstudents.com/calendar • We highly encourage you to list all your organization’s events on the events calendar. • Our new website has a much improved calendaring system with a better layout, options to add only certain org calendars to your personal calendar or phone, and weekly emails to all medical students on events for the week. 13. Events Calendar Title Description Post text, pictures, etc. Event Type Tag of student org (admin, MSA, IMIG, etc). Start typing the name of your org and it should appear after 1 sec. Details (dates, location, map) UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  14. Events Calendar • To add an event to the calendar, go to uwmedstudents.com/calendar. • Login using your personal or org’s info (top of page) and then click post your event. • This will take you to the event editor system which is very similar to the post editor. Add a event title, body (you can copy paste images here too), and then scroll down to add event details. • Next, select the category of your event on the write • Finally, tag your event to your org. Just start typing the name of your org (admin, MSA, IMIG, etc.) in the tags box and your org should appear after 1 second. If not, type in the full name of your organization. This allows people to see events from only your organization if desired. • When finished, click publish. • If your org has your own google calendar, etc. you can have your calendar automatically sync with our calendar so you only have to worry about your calendar. • To set this up, just send the link for your calendar (a .ics/ iCal link) to webmaster@uwmedstudents.org with the name of your organization. 15. Featured Posts Slider • To change the images on the front page slider, go to Appearance > Verto Theme Options > Featured Posts. Here you can add pictures manually or select the posts whose featured images appear on the slider. Make sure the size of the image is around the size it asks for. • Admittedly this slider is not very easy to use since images must be resized manually. If you want it, you can it by checking the option to have it on your homepage. UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  16. Embed YouTube Videos and other HTML Use the HTML editor to add content like YouTube videos or other embed codes. Make sure you add the html on the last step. Use the visual editor to add any text, then switch to the html editor to add the code, then hit publish. Sometimes if you switch back to the visual editor after adding code, it will remove the code. An easier way to add YouTube videos is to click the grey/red play button on the visual editor. Just paste the url for your video in the space it gives you. Warning: We have enabled the option to allow you to add HTML code to make it easier for you to post things. This feature can also be used maliciously to hack into the website. Please keep your passwords safe and do not give them to anyone outside of your organization. UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee

  17. Support • This new system makes it easier for us to help you change things on your site. If you ever run into problems, please contact us at webmaster@uwmedstudents.com • Wordpress is a very popular blogging/ content management system. If you have problems figuring out how to do things, or want to explore how to do interesting things with the software, often a google search “____ on wordpress” will give many great results. There is also a link to wordpress support documents under the “W” logo on the top left corner of your dashboard. UW Medical Student Association Communication Committee
