  1. Road Ranger Orientation

  2. What is your Job or Scope of Services • Move vehicles from travel lanes (disabled or involved in accidents). Unless injuries are involved. • Assist disabled vehicles. • Pick up debris blocking lanes. • Offer 2 free phone calls to motorists in need.

  3. Road Rangers are NOT allowed to… • Tow vehicles to private property. • Tow anyone home or to a mechanic shop. • Refer people to mechanics or body shops. • Refer people to use a private towing service. • Charge for any service. • Request tips.

  4. M.O.T. • Always stop behind the incident. • Leave at least1 car length in between your truck and the vehicle in front of you. • Turn your tires toward the nearest curb. • Arrow board must show the appropriate arrow. • Seat belt MUST be worn at all times while in the truck (even when in the shoulder).

  5. Cone Use • 15 cones MUST be used if you are blocking ANY lanes. • Use proper tapering of lanes. • Cones must be spread out all the way to the front of the incident. • No less than 8 cones MUST be used while working on the shoulder (disabled vehicle, accident, paperwork, etc.)

  6. Lights and arrow board • Communicate with TMC • Setup MOT = cones or flares • Adjust MOT = cones or flares • Coordinate with trooper • Update TMC

  7. Lane Closures • MUST ask for backup if closing more than one lane. • Ask for backup if you are at the bottom of a hill or around a curve (whether you are blocking a lane or on the shoulder). • Ask for backup if you feel unsafe.

  8. Safety Vest • Safety Vest MUST be worn at all times both in and out of your truck. • Safety vest must be clean and visible. • Safety vest must fit properly (close in the front).

  9. Lights and Equipment • Check all safety lights (arrow board, DMS sign, light bar, head lights, brake lights, etc.) before your shift. • Report any lights out to your supervisor immediately. • Check all equipment on your truck before your shift. • If missing any equipment, notify your supervisor immediately.

  10. Zones/Beats • Drivers must stay IN their zone at all times unless: • Given the OK from the TMC to backup another unit. • Given the OK from the TMC for lunch or break. • Given the OK from the TMC to replenish supplies. • Given the OK from the TMC to end shift. • Given the Ok from the TMC for any other reason. • Two trucks should NOT be together at any time unless given the OK from the TMC.

  11. Paperwork • If paperwork is done on the shoulder: • A minimum of 8 cones must be set up. • Driver must be wearing a seatbelt while in the truck at all times. • Light bar must be on. • Driver has a maximum of 5 minutes to do paperwork.

  12. PDA • All drivers must log into their PDA at the start of their shift • All drivers must check that they have the correct date & correct truck number • If the verification code that has been provided to you by dispatch is not accepted then you know you have made an error when entering the date & truck number

  13. Personal Cell Phone Use • Absolutely NO cell phone use while working an incident (accident, disabled vehicle, debris, lane closures, etc…) unless driver can not communicate with the TMC and must call 911, or *FHP. • Limit personal cell phone use while driving.

  14. Radio Communication • Radio the TMC BEFORE you get off your truck for any reason (accident, disabled vehicle, debris, etc…). • Absolutely NO driver to driver dispatching, all calls must come from the TMC. • If you need backup, radio the TMC to request it, not another driver. • Do not give your call to another driver. • Use proper 10 codes and alpha codes when communicating with the TMC.

  15. Radio Communication cont. • Think of what you have to say before you radio the TMC. • Give the TMC operator all the information they need (as per “Sunguide Transportation Management Communications Policy Manual”). • If the situation changes (lanes open, close more lanes, secondary accident, etc.) let the TMC know. • No names or personal expressions (please, thank you, etc.)

  16. Radio Communication cont. • Owners nor Supervisors are allowed to correct nor speak to their drivers over the radio system. • Bravo channels are to be used only for working major incidents when asked to do so by the TMC. • You must be on the Fleet channel at all times.

  17. Radio Communication cont. • Before you key up the mic: • Listen for ongoing transmissions. • Think about what you have to say. • Once you key up the mic: • Transmit your call sign (614). • Wait for a response (614 go ahead). • Give your information to base in order.

  18. Radio Communication cont. Information Order: • Call sign (617) • Type of call (accident, disable, debris) • Location (direction {SB, NB, EB, WB}, Highway, Cross street) • Short description (2 vehicles, color, make, model, etc.) • What you need (Need FHP, Fire Rescue, Hazmat, etc.) • Incident Number: case numbers will be issued after the incident has been cleared. There is no need to ask for the number, dispatch will issue the number automatically once they have updated and closed the incident.

  19. Radio Communication cont. • Incident Numbers: • Are 4 digit numbers. • Will be issued after calling in 10-98. • No need to ask for the incident number.
