ELITE AND IVY LEAGUE UNIVERSITIES HIGHLY COMPETITIVE- Acceptace of 30% of applicants, need high GPA, stellar test scores, superior writing skills, and great extra curricular achievements DIVERSE STUDENT BODY- Due to the volume of applicants, the makeup of the student body is diverse in economic class, cultures, races, and nationalities-the commonality is superior academic record.

    7. STATE UNIVERSITIES Florida State has a great state university system. It is affordable and there are universities that have the reputations and admissions standards of Elite universities. OTHER STATES University systems are very good if not excellent. Research must be done to find that perfect fit between you and the university. Just remember that they limit the out-of-state enrollment. PLEASE NOTE: Most State University are big, have thousands of students, Greek organizations, athletics, and numerous student activities. The lecture halls are big, football games are the biggest deal in campus. Some students do well in this environment others feel overwhelmed.

    8. LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOLS *These are schools that provide personal attention to the student. They emphasize the development of speaking and writing skills. These schools are for those students who do not yet know what they want to study. SOME OF THESE SCHOOLS ALSO HAVE SCIENCE FIELD OF CONCENTRATION INCLUDING ENGINEERING. *Liberal Arts Universities can be private or public or could be within a larger university. *Some Liberal Arts colleges are Truman State University(Missouri); Ramapo College of New Jersey; Sonoma State University and Pomona College (California); College of Charleston; St. Mary College of Maryland; etc.

    9. Community Colleges Programs of 6 months to two years designed for the student to either transfer into a four-year university (A.A) or go directly into the workforce (A.S. and Certificate Programs). Open admissions anyone with a high school diploma or GED is admitted. SAT/ACT not required do need to be placed with either SAT/ACT or CPT scores (more about that later!) Vast selection of programs including Graphic Design, Music Production & Management, Fire Science Technology, Nursing and much more. Miami Dade College offers s full scholarship including books, fee, and stipend to students who are selected to attend the Honors College. Broward College as well as the other Community Colleges in the state offer many of the same programs.

    10. NARROWIN THE COLLEGE SEARCH SPEAK TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS THAT HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROCESS AND ASK FOR ADVICE. SPEAK TO YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR (CAP ADVISOR) IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IN A SCHOOL- (academics, location, size, sports, campus life, etc.) ATTEND COLLEGE FAIRS-(There is a fall NACAC College Fair in October and a late winter fair in February)-get information. Request information on line or call the admissions offices for school information. -DONT FORGET TO ASK ABOUT FINANCIAL AID. DEVIDE YOUR LIST OF SCHOOLS - Reach school (you would be overjoyed to get in) Target schools (based on GPA, Test Scores, and activities you are a great match) Safety school (Your GPA, Test Scores, and activities surpass the median average from the year before for acceptance) STAY ORGANIZED, READ, AND KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING.

VISIT THE CAMPUS DURING THE SUMMER OF JUNIOR TO SENIOR YEAR VISIT THOSE SCHOOLS ON YOUR LIST CHECK THEIR SCHEDULE TO SEE THAT CLASSES ARE IN SESSION AND THAT YOU CAN SPEAK TO ADMISSIONS AND PROFESSORS. LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE COMING AND SET UP A MEETING WITH ONE OR TWO PROFESSORS, ADMISSIONS OFFICER, AND FINANCIAL AID. DRESS FOR SUCCESS (NEAT CASUAL) AND BE ON TIME. EXPLORE CAMPUS AND SPEAK TO STUDENTS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY. STAY THE NIGHT IN A DORM IF YOU CAN. VISIT THE CITY OR TOWN-SEE HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO LIVE THERE. SEND THANK YOU NOTES AFTER YOUR VISIT.

    14. SAT Subject Tests Subject Tests (formerly SAT II) are designed to measure your knowledge and skills in particular subject areas, as well as your ability to apply that knowledge. Required by CERTAIN colleges/universities for CERTAIN majors. Offered on the SAME DAY as the SAT I (except for the March administration) You may sign to take up to (3) SAT II on the same test date. Registration available online at www.collegeboard.com Suggest you take after AP or Honors class taken in the subject. TRY TO TAKE THESE IN JUNE AFTER AP EXAMS WHEN YOU STILL HAVE THE MATERIAL FRESH IN YOU MINDS.

Academic Courses Recommended For Florida State Universities AS OF SEPTEMBER 2008 Completion of 20+ academic units in a college preparatory curriculum 4 years of English 4 years of mathematics (Algebra I, II, Geometry, Trig., Calculus) 3 years of natural sciences (including lab) 3 years of social studies 2 to 4 years of the same foreign language (American Sign Language may not be accepted by some out of state schools and private institutions) THEY DO PREFER 4 YEARS. 4 years of academic electives (especially in the areas of math, natural sciences and/or social studies)

    16. The Application Process THERE ARE SEARCH ENGINES THAT WILL HELP WITH THE STATE UNIVERSITY APPLICATION PROCESS AND IN FINDING THE RIGHT MATCH IN COLLEGES AND SCHOLARSHIPS. THERE ARE ALSO NATIONAL SEARCH ENGINES. THESE SEARCH ENGINES ARE: WWW.FACTS.ORG; WWW.CAPPEX.COM, WWW.ZINCH.ORG.

Applying For Admission Application (online or paper online is preferred by most schools) STAY ON TOP OF THE DEADLINES FOR EACH SCHOOL Transcript : electronic or hard copy (See Mrs. Jimenez in the main office from 10:00 am to 11:30 am every day-you will do this in the fall) Letters of recommendation (if applicable BEGIN ASKING YOUR TEACHERS) Essay you will WORK ON the essays in the summer Application fee (varies) Copy of other required documentation (if applicable) Important! Keep files of everything, be organized, and Keep photocopies of everything you mail! YOU WILL DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATIONS OF SCHOOLS YOU ARE INTERESTED AND BEGIN TO WRITE THE ESSAYS NOW!

    20. The Common Application Over 300 colleges and universities accept it It will simplify your life! You may download it at: www.commonapp.org Check the site to see if the university requires anything additional. When asking for recommendations, give your teachers/counselor 10 days notice and ask if you can put them as recommender before inviting them on the common App.

Application Deadlines EARLY DECISION: Binding Early October - November University of Florida - Preferred Deadline: November 1st University of Miami - Early Decision Deadline: November 1st) EARLY ACTION : Non-binding (may be different for some schools) HIGHLY RECOMMEND Most Early Deadlines tend to be in early November however, ALWAYS CONTACT EACH INSTITUTION TO VERIFY ALL DEADLINES! REGULAR DECISION: Varies as per college/university (IT IS BETTER TO SEND IT IN BEFORE DECEMBER NO MATTER WHAT THE DEADLINE FOR REGUALR DECISION IS) THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM-IF YOU APPLY EARLY YOU WILL GET YOUR ACCEPTANCE EARLY PRIOR TO DECEMBER

    22. THE COLLEGE ESSAY THE ESSAY IS THE STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW WHO THEY ARE. IT IS THE KEY COMPONENT TO THE APPLICATION. THE ESSAY MUST HAVE THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF INTRODUCTION-BODY-CONCLUSION. BE SELF-CENTERED-THE COMMITTEE WANTS TO KNOW THE STUDENT. WRITE ABOUT YOU AND HOW THINGS AFFECTED YOU, HOW THEY CHANGED YOU, AND HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF NOW. BE SPECIFIC-DO NOT USE CLICHES, DO NOT USE GENERALITIES,, DRAW A DETAIL PICTURE AND MAKE YOUR STORY REAL SO THEY DONT FORGET YOU. MAKE SURE YOUR ESSAY GOES ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE APPLICATION. BE FUNNY BUT DONT OVER DO IT AND BE RESPECTFUL. BE FOCUSED-ANSWER THE PROMPT, COMBINE CREATIVITY WITH GOOD ESSAY STRUCTURE, FOCUS, GOOD GRAMMAR, APROPRIATE TENSE SHIFTS, SUBJECT/VERB AGREEMENT, USE OF ACTIVE VOICE, DONT BE WORDY, USE PROPER PUNTUATION, AND WATCH YOUR SPELLING.

Look into local scholarships Look for institutional scholarships from the college/ university Look on the website for the Scholarship Bulletin published at least once a month at the CAP Office YOU CAN START APPLYING NOW!!!!!!!

    24. Watch Out! College Scams Want Your Money PEOPLE ARE OUT TO GET YOUR MONEY ANY SERVICES YOU PAY FOR ASK WHAT YOU ARE GETTING FOR YOUR MONEY AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING YOUR MONEYS WORTH. STUDENTS WILL GET EMAILS ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS. IF NO APPLICATION WAS COMPLETED, YOU DID NOT WIN ANYTHING. SERVICES FOR FINANCIAL AID ARE FREE DONT PAY FOR WHAT YOU CAN DO YOURSELF. IF YOU ARE A FINALIST AND DID NOT APPLY- BE CAREFUL. IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS NOT TRUE.

Florida Financial Aid including Bright Futures (FFAA) Florida Student Assistant Grant (FSAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending public institutions First Generation matching Grant Program is available to all eligible students Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending private institutions The electronic form must be submitted over the internet at www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org after Dec. 1st of senior year Deadlines vary. CSS/Financial Profile Required by some colleges and universities MUST BE COMPLETED BY OCTOBER 09 THROUGH COLLEGEBOARD Institutions use the information collected on the CSS Profile to help them award nonfederal student aid funds-This is a very detailed financial profile that must be completed to get institutional aid. Application is available online at www.collegeboard.com or by calling 1-800-778-6888 DO THIS IN OCTOBER OF YOUR SENIOR YEAR
