The Chinese first discovered and used explosives in the 3rd century B.C. In little hand cannons, that were used during celebrations
Roger Bacon perfected the recipe for Black powder in the 12th century
About a century after Bacon came up with Black powder a another European named Berthod Schwarts did a little mixing and matching and came up with a blend of Black powder that launched a pebble and therefore he now had Gunpowder and the first gun
Which soon lead to the first cannon and the use of explosives as a weapon of war
Then in the 18th century a Italian dude Ascano Sobrero mixed Nitric Acid and glycerin together and came up with Nitroglycerin a very explosive and unstable substance
In 1867 Alfred Noble managed to make Nitroglycerin stable and got a patent for Dynamite and also founded the Nobel peace prize because he could foresee the destruction his creation could cause
The Texas City Disaster in 1947 brought to light the explosive potential of ANFO when a Cargo ship the S.S. Grandcamp carrying not only 2300 tons of ammonium nitrate, but also 380 bales of cotton, 59000 bales of binder twine, 9334 bags of shelled peanuts and some farm machinery blew up at the dock when the ammonium nitrate managed to mix with the ships diesel fuel blowing the 7176 ton ship 20 feet in the air.
Which brings use to the use of explosives in the “modern” world!
In 2001 the USGS noted that the US produced 2.38 million metric tons of explosives and 69% of it was used in coal mining and 165,000 metric tons of it were used in Wyoming!
I found that there are many alternate uses of explosives……………………… • Some which are • Humorous • Destructive • Violent • Weird
In fact • A lot of the alternate uses are illegal uses of “homemade” explosives. Mostly for the entertainment of the maker! People have this thing about blowing stuff up!

Do you have ? • Draino • Clorox • Comet • Tin foil • Soda bottles • Film canisters • Pool cleaning acid • Matches • Bullets/Reloading supplies • Nails • Gasoline
Here is the basic recipe for making “Bottle Bombs” • Take a soda bottle glass or plastic and put either dry tin foil and muratic acid or just dry ice in it, then put the lid on and run like hell! The “fuse” on this one can be rather short or long depending on how much of the ingredients you put in it and how hot it is outside!
To make your bottle bomb even more deadly just put a handful of nails or broken glass inside so that you get the added bonus of shrapnel!
So who uses this? • This is a favorite weapon of gangs in California, since it is so hard to buy guns now ! • It causes chemical burns, shrapnel wounds, blindness, deafness and death to mention a few !
Very simple to make, you just need to make a trip to the hardware, model rocket shop and sporting goods stores!
Just get a threaded pipe nipple and 2 end caps that fit it. Plus a handful of nails if so desired • At the Sporting goods store get a can of black powder • At the Rocket store get a length of fuse
Drill a hole in the pipe just big enough for the fuse, stuff the fuse in at least 3 inches, put a cap on one end then put the black powder in the pipe and then put the other cap on. • BUT
Please make sure there is absolutely no black powder on the threads because you can cause it to explode as you screw the cap on!
And You Know What! • Pipe bombs are a favorite of high school kids, mailbox bombers and domestic terrorists
Mexican M-80 • A model rocket casing • Some vesco fuse • (2) 3/4” diameter sections of wooden dowel • Black powder or smokeless powder • Hot glue
Mexican M-80 • Drill or punch a hole in the center of the casing large enough for the fuse to fit tightly • But don’t insert the fuse yet! • Wedge one piece of the dowel into one end of the casing and glue in place • Now insert the fuse in the open end all the way to other end • Pour enough powder into casing to fill it 4/5th full pack it lightly • Now insert the other dowel and glue in place
Film Canister fire ball • A 35mm film canister • Black or smokeless powder • Ziplock baggie • Hot glue • Gasoline • Vesco fuse
Film Canister fire ball • Punch a hole in the bottom of canister just big enough for the fuse • Insert the fuse halfway • Pour enough powder in to fill the canister 3/8th of the way • Now the tricky part!
Film Canister fire ball • Pour some gasoline into the ziplock bag enough to make a little pouch of gas in the corner of the bag then use a rubber band to make a little balloon out of it • Place it in the canister lid and glue it there • So it is suspended above the powder when the lid is on the canister
Film Canister fire ball • Now if you haven't blown yourself up yet glue the lid on • Light the fuse and run
Polumna • 1” X 12” strip of heavy paper • Vesco fuse • Black or smokeless powder • Hot glue • Duct tape
Polumna • Fold up one corner of the paper • Insert fuse in the fold • Secure with duct tape and hot glue • Fold up another corner and fill with powder • Duct tape together and glue • Light and run
