  2. Job description • Design costumes for a film or stage production. • Seek to enhance a character’s personality through the visual of just by what they’re wearing. • Collaborates with the director, light and setting directors, and the makeup designers.

  3. Working conditions • There are three types of costume designers and they are freelance, residential, and academic. Freelance and residential usually work inside of a specific theater, dance, or opera company. • Academic costume designers hold a professional position at school and work inside that school.

  4. earnings • Entry-Level Costume Designer: $500/ production • Experienced Costume Designer: $20,000/production • Top-Level Costume Designer: $150,000/production

  5. education • People aspiring to be costume designers must have a 2 year degree or a 4 year degree in fashion or costume design. • If your just want to learn the basics of costume designing your would probably get the 2 year associate degree. • If you want to have advanced skills in costume designing you should get the 4 year bachelor’s degree.

  6. pros • There will always be a demand for costume designers since movies will always need someone in their area of expertise. • The more of an experienced costume designer you are the more money you make from each production. • You get to be very creative.

  7. cons • You are an important part of a film production team and you will always be needed. You have to make sure your schedule is very flexible so that when you are needed you can always be there for anything related to your area, so it might seem like there is not a lot of time for a personal life.

  8. Important questions • Is the job above the line or below the line? • The job is above the line. • What phase of production is the job? • Costume designers are mostly involved in the pre-production and production phases of film making.

  9. My opinion of the job • My opinion of the job is that it’s a job that requires a lot of creativity and artistic views. It could be a lot of fun because it involves different types of clothing and you get to experiment with different fabrics and patterns and how they cold enhance or effect a character’s persona in a production.
