  3. What is research? • Originates with a question or problem • Requires a clear articulation of a goal • Follows a specific plan of procedure • Usually divides the principal problem into more manageable sub-problems Leedy and Ormrod, 2001

  4. What is research? • Guided by the specific research problem, question, or hypothesis. • Accepts certain critical assumptions • Requires the collection and interpretation of data in an attempt to resolve the problem that initiated the research Leedy and Ormrod, 2001

  5. Application to Evaluation • Think critically for a moment about each of the seven principles of research. How can these principles be applied to evaluation? M. Burns, 2003
