China: At a Glance • Population: 1.3 Billion - (1/5 of the world’s inhabitants) • GDP: $1.65 Trillion (9.5% growth compared to U.S. growth of 4.4%) • Per Capita GDP exceeded $1,000 for first time in 2003 • GDP by sector agriculture: 13.8% industry: 52.9% services: 33.3% • Higher education: In 1997, university enrollment in “regular higher education” stood at 3.2 million; by 2000, it had risen to 7 million. The Ministry of Education plans to have 16 million enrolled by 2010 (including distance and continuing education).

China Strategies • Joint Centers – Permanent reciprocal presence with counterpart universities • Pathways – 2+2 (undergraduate) and 2+1 (graduate) articulation and pathway agreements • Study Abroad & Exchange – undergraduate and graduate • Professional Training – UC providing services to mid-career professionals • Program Development – assistance to universities seeking to add or improve programs • Cooperative Education – identification of opportunities with private companies • Recruitment – Identification of local representation for recruitment of fee-paying students
