  1. On The Waterfront

  2. PLOT Edie and Terry are walking in the park after escaping Johnny Friendly’s mob at the church. The location is at New Jersey Park.

  3. Terry • Inquisitive • Open body language • High confidence • Misunderstood(placing the glove on the hand is his form of a kind gesture)

  4. Edie -Presents herself in a formal, lady-like manner -Uncomfortable with her surroundings -Glove represents insecurity -Lack of confidence and trust in others

  5. The Glove -Represents Edie’s insecurity -Relates to how uncomfortable she is of Terry’s prying questions -When Terry wears it, she is vulnerable, and feels very little control -Terry attempts to connect to her via placing his hand inside it

  6. Spiked gates -Symbolic of how mean the waterfront can be -”That’s what makes people mean and difficult. People don’t care enough about you.” -Represents the waterfront as a prison

  7. Fog -Set in background to add a chilly atmosphere -Symbolic of Terry’s conscience at work -Sets the mood

  8. Themes -Fear and family -Love -Career

  9. Setting -Set in the park on the docks in New Jersey -Gives characters a chance to discuss their lives -Gives a background on Edie

  10. Historical/Social/Cultural Context -Culture of the 1950’s -Black and white film: normal for time period -Clothing is common for those in this time period -Edie’s dress is popular for women -Terry’s clothing mimics those worn by working class men -Terry accustomed to the city -”I never really liked the country”

  11. Edie’s clothing -Edie covered neck down -Insecure about her self, low self-esteem: Very little skin is revealed -Losing her glove represents the vulnerability she is feeling -When she takes it back, she is more comfortable and the mood lightens

  12. Music • キThe music enters as soon as Edie tells Terry that she ‘remembered him the first moment she saw him’. • キIt is as though it is a pivotal moment. It suggests that a relationship may be possible. • Edie seems to reciprocate and flirt back as opposed to the first portion of this scene, the music increasing the intensity and reflecting her reciprocation.

  13. Sound Effects • Initially all that can be heard is the whistling of the ships and the sound of the gusty wind. • This complements the effect of the fog and almost isolated atmosphere. • Only Terry and Edie are around suggesting it would be unwise to leave Edie walk alone. It interferes with the dialogue and somewhat adding to the awkwardness in their conversation.
