  1. Green Building Forum Bahrain Jeffrey Willis Chairman, Emirates Green Building Council 4 May 2010

  2. Emirates Green Building Council • Global Issues • U.A.E. Focus • Case Studies

  3. Founded on 02 July 2006 • Member of World Green Building Council • 250 members as of end December 2009 • Members from all elements of the Construction Industry

  4. The Vision of the Emirates GBC “The UAE will be one of the 5 global leaders in the reduction of the built environment’s ecological footprint by 2015.” Mission Statement The Emirates Green Building Council is an independent non-profit forum that shapes policies for the built environment and facilitates collaborative solutions to promote sustainable practices in the UAE.

  5. What do we do? • Work to influence policy and regulation in the advancement of sustainable built environment • Capacity build the community towards green building principles applicable to the region. • provide networking opportunities, technical workshops and conferences for member and non members. • act as a conduit between members and non members looking for support, services and products in relation to the built environment. • Provide the link between international Green Building movements and the local industry.

  6. What is a Green Building? It does NOT have to have a closely controlled environment have an integrated transport solution be Zero Carbon have zero waste / pollution be powered by renewables be green in colour recycle its water be on brown-field site be extremely innovative

  7. Green Buildings are designed to respect the planet’s resources without compromising the quality of life in and around the building whilst being affordable to the target income group

  8. Green Buildings are Environmentally Correct Socially Responsible Economically Viable designed to respect the planet’s resources without compromising the quality of life in and around the building whilst being affordable to the target income group

  9. GLOBAL URBANISATION • The Issues • rapid pace is forcing compromise • exacerbated by population / standard of living increase • complex design relationships • very few urban sustainable successes • no advanced holistic design tools by 2030 60% of the world’s population will be living in cities……

  10. The Future • more recycling • more sustainable stewardship schemes • carbon labelling • alternative and innovative materials • material efficient design • more local manufacture • all deleterious materials banned • global databases Materials 60% of all materials globally go into the construction industry

  11. Water over 60% of the earth’s population will face a water shortage • The Future • more better recycling • innovative demand reduction • more and innovative desalination • integrated grey & black water recycling • sea water WC flushing • new irrigation strategies

  12. Transport 25% of all energy used is by transportation • The Future • integrated public transport solutions • higher density development close to hubs • fewer automobile miles • low carbon emission solutions • alternative fuels • ‘product mile’ schemes • more cycling / walking • more congestion charging / taxation

  13. The Future • low emission design solutions • intelligent living building solutions • low water design solutions • higher density and more mixed use • better public transport connectivity • socially superior • more local materials • more durable • more recyclable • more refurbishment • inclusively designed • automated parking • improved indoor environmental quality • more integrated renewables • lower embodied carbon Buildings 50% of all energy and 30% of all water generated globally is consumed by buildings

  14. The Future • self sustaining communities • more ‘heart & soul’ • higher densities with transportation hubs • integrated transport solutions • low carbon infrastructure • more urban renewables • ‘total process’ recycling hubs • better bio-diversity & ecological solutions • vertical farming • more ‘green – blue’ structures • more secure • inclusively designed • more urban regeneration • less pollution Developments Even though buildings are becoming ‘greener’ the ecological footprint of large developments and cities continues to increase

  15. BEAMs and Legislation • The Future • increased BEAM popularity • some compulsory BEAMs • development of DEAMs • more & increasingly complex building control legislation • carbon emission capping & and trading • building / development labelling • renewables proportion fixing Courtesy of Atkins

  16. U.A.E. FOCUS • New Regulations • New Green Building Assessment Method • Clear Government Backing Emirates Green Building Council

  17. U.A.E. ACCREDITED BUILDINGS-LEED • 4 Interiors – 1 Platinum, 2 Gold, 1 certified. • 5 New Construction, - 1 Platinum, 3 Gold, 1 Silver. • 4 Core & Shell, - 4 Silver. • 1 Existing Building, certified. Emirates Green Building Council

  18. U.A.E. Green Buildings • TECOM (ENPARC) • Dubai Chamber of Commerce • Royal City Contracting Emirates Green Building Council

  19. ENPARC • 1 Interior – Platinum. • 4 Core & Shell, - Silver. • Less than 1% additional cost Emirates Green Building Council

  20. Dubai Chamber of Commerce • Existing Building, Certified. • Zero additional cost Emirates Green Building Council

  21. Royal City Contracting Half the time to construct. 60 years life span of concrete buildings internationally. High insulation value of R-22. Seismic resistant construction. Cracks free internal & external surfaces. Early Return of property investments. A/C tonnage savings up to 60%. 40% less building dead load. Extension friendly structure. 4 hours of fire resistive rating. Better indoor air quality. LEED certified building system. 10% - 15% more economical construction. Emirates Green Building Council

  22. Emirates Green Building Council

  23. It does not have to cost more to construct It is not too difficult

  24. It makes economic sense It makes sense for our planet It makes sense for our future
