  1. Parrot Species - An Overview of the Different Types of Parrot

  2. The parrots are a distinctive ancient group well warranting their ordinal rank. They are smart, beautiful animals. In terms of taxonomy (the scientific classification of animals) parrots belong to the Psittaciformes order, within which there are two families: Cacatuidae and Psittacidae. The Cacatuidae family consists only of the Cockatoo, with all other parrots belonging to the Psittacidae family. However, taxonomy aside, we tend to group parrots species under the following headings:

  3. The budgerigar: (Melopsittacusundulatus) is also referred to as the parakeet, shell parakeet, budgie, and common pet parakeet. However, it is not correct to refer to the budgie using the broader classification of parakeet as the budgie is in fact a particular type of small parrot native to Australia. .

  4. The Cockatiel: (Nymphicushollandicus), also referred to as the Quarrion and the Weiro, is native to the most arid areas in Australia. Many variations of cockatiel plumage have been bred in captivity, but the standard is a grey cockatiel, with some white markings on the edge of each wing, orange markings around the ears, and a yellow head.

  5. Conures: Is not a scientific classification, but is used to group together a number of small and medium sized parrots. Some of the common characteristics of this group are that they are small with long tails and strong beaks.

  6. Macaws: Rank among the most spectacular members of the avian world. All Macaw parrots have the potential to be great birds. The majority of macaws are now endangered in the wild with six species that are already extinct. The macaw parrot is a type of parrot that originates from South America and Africa.

  7. Parakeets: (also called Budgies) are bright and beautiful pet birds. They are likely the best choice as pet birds if you want lots of energy & ones that you can interact with. These parrots are one of the most popular and sought after types of parrots.

  8. Lovebird: There are 3 sorts of Lovebird, the Black-cheeked Lovebird, the Black-Masked Lovebird and the Black-collared Lovebird. The fascinating behavior of Lovebirds make them among the most interesting pet bird. Lovebirds are slightly bigger in size than Budgies but they have very strong beaks. They are a tiny version of parrots.
