  1. Lab. Director’s Meeting IHEP, Protvino, Russia, 15-16 January 2008 D. Reistad, The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala University

  2. High Energy Storage Ring • HESR is presently being designed by a consortium consisting of FZ-Jülich, GSI and UU. • Uppsala University has taken the responsibility for designing the high energy electron cooler. • Antiproton momentum, 1.5 –15 GeV/c • Electron cooling up to 8.9 GeV/c (4.5 MeV electron energy) • Stochastic cooling above 3.8 GeV/c Target 4*1015 H/cm2

  3. HESR Electron Cooler Return bend Entrance bend Interaction straight Return straight Exit bend Magnet modules

  4. Collector Gun Pellet chain HV solenoid Electrostatic Accelerator High-voltagecolumn based on Pelletron Björn Gålnander, SFAIR-meeting, 2007-11-13

  5. H- beam • Magnetic spectrometer for precise energy control • Absolute energy calibration by means of 7Li(p,n)-reaction: Ethreshold = 1880.3558  0.0812 kV (Standard for AMS) Björn Gålnander, SFAIR-meeting, 2007-11-13

  6. Cost estimate October 2007

  7. We would like to invite partners, who want to realize this high-energy electron cooler together with us. All details are subject to negotiations.

  8. Present situation in Sweden: Sweden has declared that it will contribute 10 M€. (We hope that this amount will be increased at least to 1 % of the full FAIR) Recent decisions: Stockholm University (MSL) gets 30 MSEK (3.2 M€) provided that CRYRING becomes LSR Funding agency (“Vetenskapsrådet”) is aware of cost of high-energy electron cooler . Uppsala University (TSL) gets prolongation of “salary guarantee” for staff until 31 May 2009. Also funds to realize and test prototype electron gun and collector.

  9. Gun and Collector Design • Anodevoltage 26 kV • Beamcurrent 1 A • Cathode diameter 10 mm • Cathodefield 0.2 T • Collectorvoltage 3.5 kV • Efficiency < 99.999% • Secondaryelectrons are suppressed by a bentmagneticfield • Pulsedbeam • Fast closing of the gun • Producepencilbeam Björn Gålnander, SFAIR-meeting, 2007-11-13
