  4. Educational objectives theoretical concepts Being able to identify the basic structure and therapeutic aims of the intervention Understand how a reflexive stance is realized that helps clients to find new meanings in their lives

  5. Background Trauma treatment: • Creative arts therapies (CAT) • Cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) • Narrative-based therapies (NBT)

  6. Therapeutic actions of CAT and NBT • Assimilationof memories into newly developed contexts of meaning • Expression of disclosed memories and cognitions within a relational context and contained • A relational contextis provided

  7. Victims of violence Reminiscing is useful when the focus is on self-efficacy beliefs and valued relationships and goals

  8. Offenders • Shame management is needed to prevent remission into self-justification • How to develop new positive scripts that re-align offenders with community

  9. Expression and context Expression within a context of sharing stories helps victims and offenders to imbue their personal story with greater significance and meaning

  10. We aim at a positive adaptation of clients, namely • by reducing a sense of shame • by building a strong sense of connection and fellowship • by making transparent what is valuable in life (focusing on strengths and values) • by finding goals and find new meanings

  12. The intervention stimulates active participation With their ‘photo-essays’ clients make a representation of what they think is important in their lives

  15. Photograph 1: motivation “ I am motivated to abstain from alcohol. My son means everything to me. I want to be a good father to him without using alcohol.”

  16. “Iam motivated to take my medicine against alcohol. I have to do it myself. I am very precise at it, because alcohol and medication are a dangerous combination.”

  17. RESULTS • 46 % of all participants explores in depth emotions and meanings • 65 % of all participants mentioned illness experiences explicitly and reflected on them. • 55 % of all participants tended to evaluate their lives as told in their stories.
