  2. Welcome T-Breds It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Hialeah High School and the 2011/2012 school year. We hope that the next four years will be full of academic challenges, personal growth, and friendships to last a lifetime; and more importantly, get ready for college! Class of 2015

Student & Parent Portal Student Portal: http://www2.dadeschools.net/students/students.htm Parent Portal: http://www2.dadeschools.net/parents/parents.htm To create a new Parent Account you must obtain the following:- Your child's MDCPS student ID - Parent 6 Digit PIN number (To obtain you must visit your child's school) - Students Date of Birth (DOB) - Student birth place State or Country- Zip CodeIt takes 24 hoursafter you are registered with the Parent Account Registration System to be able to change your initial password in the Password Management/P-Synch system. After the 24 hourperiod, login to the Password Management/P-Synch from the Parent Portal Access screen using your user ID and initial password.

  4. Graduation RequirementsFOUR-YEAR, 24 CREDIT STANDARD PROGRAM Incoming 9th graders must take at least 1 credit through Florida Virtual School .

Academic Achievement • 18% attending community college • 54% attending four year universities • 6% attending technical schools • Some of the universities accepting our students: MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Brown, John Hopkins, Princeton, Tufts, Cornell, U. Penn., Boston College, Amherst, Vassar, Wellesley, Stanford, University of Miami, Miami-Dade Honors College, FIU, UCF, University of Florida, FSU, St. Thomas University, Barry University

Bright Futures Scholarships • Florida Academic Scholars Award: 100% of tuition and fees at a public state university or college. • Florida Medallion Award: 75% of tuition and fees at a public state university or community college • Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award: 75% of tuition and fees at a public state university or community college. • All Scholarships have specific GPA, class Credit, and SAT/ACT test score requirements.

  9. Testing & Other Minimum Requirements • FCAT- Reading – 300 or above • Algebra I End of Year (EOC) • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale • Community Service Project 9th Grade Counselor: Mr. Legg

Community Service Project • State requirement for graduation • Completed between 9th – 12th grade • Some programs require specific number of hours. • Can not be done for a private business. • Project must be voluntary! Students can not be paid for their community service hours. • Community service must be completed during non-school hours. • Performances at school events do not count as community service.

Dress CodeDo’s • Shirts • Polo or Oxford (both with collars) • Royal Blue, White, or Red • Solid Color • Pants • Ankle-length pants, four pocket • Khaki or Black Pants, Dark wash jeans • The school emblem is optional, although it is encouraged. • I.D. badges will be issued through the World History classes

Dress Code Don’ts • No oversized or knee-length shirts. • T-shirts worn under uniform shirt cannot be longer than uniform shirt. • No tank tops or spaghetti strap shirts. • Stomach must be covered at all times (No mid-drift showing). • No sweat pants, light jeans, capris, cargo pants, baggy pants, or • shorts of any length. • All pants must be worn at the waist, no underwear showing. • No skirts of any length. • No hats, caps, bandanas, do-rags, or any type of headgear. • •All shoes MUST HAVE BACKS – No flip flops. • •Uniforms may not be altered.

  14. Dress Code Don’ts cont. • Electronic devices such as iPods, MP3’s, and personal game systems are NOT ALLOWED TO BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL. •Cell phones cannot be used or turned on between 7:20am and 2:20pm.

Competition Clubs, Performing Groups & Athletes • Must read and sign an Interscholastic Competition and Performance Contract. • Must demonstrate high standards of ethics and decorum. • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 in academics and conduct. • Must not have 10 or more absences or 20 or more tardies to school. • If assigned to SCSI on the day of a game, performance, or competition they will not be allowed to participate.

  19. Student Discipline The primary objective of Miami-Dade County Public Schools is to enhance each student’s potential for learning and to foster positive interpersonal relationships. The Code of Student Conduct is the District’s policy that creates a safe learning environment to ensure academic success. READ THE CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT. Student Discipline cont. • http://ehandbooks.dadeschools.net/policies/90/index.htm Examples of behaviors that are unacceptable and will require corrective action: • Cutting class / Skipping • Unauthorized use of electronic devices • Failure to comply with class and/or school rules (Defiance) • Violation of dress code • Disruptive behavior • Fighting • Excessive Tardies The staff and administration at Hialeah High School will work with students and parents to correct behaviors that interfere with student safety and academic achievement.

  21. Attendance Policy and Procedures

  22. Excused Absences • Illnesses of self • Medical appointment • Death in the family • Religious observance • Immigration or court appearance • School-sponsored event • Situations beyond the control of parent or student, as determined by the principal or principal’s designee

Unexcused Absences -Absence due to vacations, personal services • local non-school event, program, or sporting activity • Absences due to older students providing care services for siblings • Absences due to illness of others Warning:All unexcused absences will result in a failing grade being issued for any work missed on the day(s) in question.

  24. Within 3 school days after the last absence, a note(s) must be submitted to the attendance office before school (6:40 a.m. – 7:10 a.m.) or during lunch for an absence to be considered excused. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence. Attendance Office: Room # 636 Excusing Student Absences

  25. No Credit Policy • A student accumulating ten (10) or more class unexcused absences in an annual course or five (5) or more class unexcused absences in a designated semester course will have quarterly, semester and final grades(s) withheld pending an administrative screening and completion of assigned interventions by the Attendance Review Committee. In a block schedule school, 1 day of class attendance = 2 days of class attendance in a regular schedule school.

  26. 10 or More Absences • Once a student accumulates a total of ten (10) absences, excused or unexcused, due to illness, a parent is required to submit a doctor’s note or make personal contact with the Administration in order to excuse the absences.

  27. DHSMV • The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will suspend, or not issue a license to any student who has 15 or more unexcused absences in a 90-day calendar period.

  28. Tardy to School • When arriving late to school, it is the student’s responsibility to sign in tardy to school. Please note that when a student arrives tardy and does not sign in, he or she is marked absent for the day and will be subject to additional administrative action. • 3 -5 Tardies = Detention • 6 or more = Suspension from school

  29. Early Release • This causes disruption to the academic performance and may create safety and security concerns. • No students will be released within the first or last 30 minutes of the school day unless authorized by the principal or principal’s designee (i.e., emergency, sickness). • Students must have parent authorization to leave school early (parent/authorized person must be present). • In order for students to receive the best education possible they must be present in school and in their classes.

  31. Farewell Thank you for taking time from your busy schedules to be here. Hialeah High School hopes to foster a community of students that will have the skills to achieve their personal goals as well as strengthen our society. The time and interest you invest in your child’s education will be rewarded four years from now when they walk on stage to receive their high school diploma. Go Class of 2015!
