Intro • Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, begins in 1812 (Pip is only 7 years old at the time) • While the story ends in 1840, when Pip is older • During this time period the Industrial Revolution had been at it for a while, however it still brought new technology throughout Great Britain

Industrial Revolution • The Industrial Revolution played a huge role in the creation of new technology and inventions that help us today • The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain for several reasons. The country had large deposits of coal and iron, the two natural resources on which early industrialization largely depended. Other industrial raw materials came from Great Britain's colonies • The Industrial Revolution created an enormous increase in the production of many kinds of goods. Some of this increase in production resulted from the introduction of power-driven machinery and the development of factory organization.

  4. Industrial Revolution(cont.) • In Great Expectations, there are a few examples of new technology during the period throughout the novel • The industrial revolution was the beginning of the electrical inventions that effect our lives today

Popular Inventions • 1793 • Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin • 1800 • Count Alessandro Volta invents battery • 1804 • FreidrichWinzer was the first person to patent gas lighting* • 1810 • Peter Durand invents the tin can • 1814 • Joseph NicephoreNiepce was the first person to take a photograph. He took the picture by setting up a machine called the camera obscura in the window of his home in France. It took eight hours for the camera to take the picture. This picture is the first photograph

Inventions (cont.) • 1819 • Samuel Fahnestock patents a soda fountain • 1824 • Michael Faraday invents the first toy balloon* • 1827 • John Walker invents modern matches* • 1829 • American, W.A Burt invents a typewriter • 1830 • Frenchman, BarthelemyThimonnier invents a sewing machine The first soda fountain

Technology in the book • Gas Lighting: Lamp • Throughout the book the lamp has been mentioned, however to be specific, on pg. 70, it is including along with other casual items during the time period • The Modern Match • On pg. 797, this device was use to light a simple candle, showing that this invention was very convent at the time, Considering the didn’t have electricity yet. • A Balloon • A balloon of some kind was mentioned on pg.127, though Charles dickens didn’t completely explain which kind of balloon it was. But it was a invention nevertheless.
