  1. Developing A School Wide Cross Country Fitness Run

  2. Objective: You will be able to design and implement a school wide cross country fitness run.

  3. Before The Race : Lay out the course: 1 mile, flat w/small hills, large area for the start and finish, create modified course options. Naming the race: Memorial, Turkey Trot, motivational cause Community Awareness: Invite parents, teachers, administrators, past runners and high school CC team. Add information and the date to the newsletter, Edline, master calendar, faculty meetings, etc. Order prizes: ribbons and trophies Gather Materials: cones, paint, water, tables/chairs, finish cards, tick/timing sheets, and stopwatches.

  4. Before the Race Practice Runs: once a week practice, cover objectives and training principles, goal setting, teacher locations, times for girls and boys finish, cross country team race, modified course for students with special needs, and closure activities. Assignment: running log/journal , goal setting, BCR on FITT principle. Staff support: gathering staff to assist with students with special needs for practice and race.

  5. Race Day: • Materials: gather cones, awards, tables/chairs, water, finish cards and time sheets, pens, clipboards, bullhorn, cameras, and stopwatches. • Nurse: notify nurse to bring down medications. • Motivational Speech: review procedures and safety concerns. • High School Team and parent volunteers: organize and place helpers. • Finish Line: 1 timer, 1 recorder, 1 person handing out place cards, 2-3 people to keep students in order. • Special Needs: give extra time to change and get to the start. Make sure each student w/special needs has • a helper.

  6. After Race: • Closure: review fitness topics and objectives with students • Assignment: due 1 week after race • Results: send results to newspaper, newsletter, announcements. • Bulletin Board: post pictures and results on the bulletin board. • Behavior Plan Rewards:
