  2. SOCIAL CAPITAL RESEARCH • Social capital has been defined as “networks, together with shared norms, values and understandings that facilitate cooperation within or among groups” (Cote & Healy, 2001, p41)

SOCIAL CAPITAL RESEARCH CURRENT SITUATION • Multidimensional Construct • Operationalised • Civic engagement and trust (Kawachi, Kennedy, Lochner & Prothrow-stith, 1997) • Trust, reciprocity, self-efficacy, safety and civic engagement (Hendryx, Ahern, Lovrich, P. & McCurdy,2000) • Trust, reciprocity, social networks and voluntary associations (Putnam, 2000) • Limitations • Restricted factors • Use of secondary data

HEALTH ASSESSMENT Previous Assessment • SF-12 (Hendryx, Ahern, Lovrich, P. & McCurdy, 2000) • One item measure of health and five health related quality of life questions (Petrou & Kupek, 2008) • Mortality (using 4 causes of death) (Kawachi, Kennedy, Lochner & Prothrow-stith, 1997) • Combined scale of depression and anxiety only (Mitchell & LaGory, 2002)

  6. AIMS OF RESEARCH Address Limitations • Onyx & Bullens’, 2000, Social Capital Questionnaire Additional subscales: • Sense of belonging • Sense of pride • Using the SF-8 health Questionnaire • Wellbeing measures by the “Value for Life” subscale of the Social Capital Questionnaire.

  7. RESEARCH QUESTION AND HYPOTHESES Hypothesis Trust will predict physical health Hypothesis Sense of Belonging will predict wellbeing Hypothesis Sense of belonging will predict stress, anxiety and depression

  8. METHODOLOGY • Participants GMHBA members n= 244 • Measures Onyx & Bullen Social Capital Questionnaire (added items sense of belonging, sense of pride) • SF-8 Health Questionnaire • DASS • Value of Life (Wellbeing)

  9. METHODOLOGY • Procedure All Members with email addresses were invited to participate in an online survey. • Data screening • Missing data • Outliers • Normality

  15. Summary of results • Belonging predicted Total health, mental and physical health, anxiety and depression as well as wellbeing. • Trust and Safety predicted physical health, stress and wellbeing • Neighbourhood predicted anxiety • Proactivity predicted wellbeing

  16. LIMITATIONS • Cross sectional design • Follow up letter FUTURE RESEARCH • Test the causal relationship • Differentiate clear factors
