ASSOCIATED WITH HYPERTHYROIDISM:
1- Diffuse hyperplasia of the thyroid associated with Graves disease (accounts for 85% of cases)
2- Hyperfunctionalmultinodular goiter
3- Hyperfunctional adenoma of the thyroid
TSH-secreting pituitary adenoma (rare)
May not be associated with hyperthyroidisim:
- Most common cause of painful thyroid gland
- Often preceded by an upper respiratory infection
- Cervical adenopathyis not prominent.
- Initial thyrotoxicosis from gland destruction:
Increased serum T4, decreased serum TSH
