  1. Field Trip: The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum Sarah Gshwind Maura Anzia 5/3/06

  2. Introduction • We would introduce this field trip by explaining that we are going to be learning about how our bodies work, and we are going to take a field trip so that we can learn more about our bodies and what they do.

  3. Driving Question • How do the different systems in your body work? What are the different systems and what are their functions?

  4. Objectives of the Field Trip • For students to get some background knowledge on human anatomy and how their body works • To introduce a unit on human anatomy • To become aware of how different parts of your body have different functions

  5. Outcomes • Students will have gotten the background knowledge necessary for the unit and learned the basics about human anatomy. • Students will have had a more hands on approach to learning about human anatomy which will help them later on in the unit because they are more likely to remember the different activities they did at the museum.

  6. 5 terms that students will learn during the trip • Respiratory System • Circulatory System • Muscular System • Digestive System • The Five Senses (Identify and describe each one and its purpose)

  7. Respiratory System • The respiratory system supplies our blood with oxygen so that blood can deliver our oxygen to every part of our body. • This occurs through breathing. • Museum Activity: Crawling through the respiratory system that was connected to the heart exhibit

  8. Circulatory System • This system allows our blood to move throughout our body. It includes the heart, the lungs, and the blood vessels. • Museum Activity: There is a large heart that you can crawl through and explore. There are buttons and things you can push to learn more about the circulatory system

  9. Muscular System • The muscular system is what allows us to move. Muscles tighten up and relax to allow for different kinds of movement. • Museum Activity: A wheelchair activity where you try to do different things while in a wheelchair to explore how your muscles work

  10. Digestive System • Digestion is when food and drink are broken down into small parts so that your body can use them for nourishment and energy. • Museum Activity: There is a digestion tunnel you can crawl through and learn interesting things about digestion, and there are also small activities that explain things like proteins, carbohydrates, etc.

The Five Senses • Touch - what you feel when you touch an object • Sight - How you see things • Hear - What happens when you hear noise • Taste - How you taste different foods and drinks • Smell - How you smell different things like flowers • Museum Activity: There are different stations for each of the senses that allow you to try things out and figure out how each of the senses work

Importance to Learning and Everyday Life • It is important to learn how your body works because it is relevant to your every day life and many young kids do not know that their bodies are always working to keep them going. This can be connected to when the students sleep, play, and work in school.

  14. Cost • For a group visit, it is $4.00 for every child. With a group of 40 students, the cost would be $160. • If we decide to do one of the educational programs as well, the cost is $6 per child, so for 40 students, it would cost $240

  15. Chaperones • The museum requires that there must be one adult for every five children. • If there were 40 children, there also must be 8 adults present.

  16. Mode of Transportation • The museum is right down on Wisconsin Ave by the lake, and it would be possible to safely transport the students to the museum by school bus.

  17. Field Trip Permission Form: • My child____________ can go to the Betty Brinn’s children museum on (date.) • The cost is $4.00. Please include that with the permission form when it is handed in.

  18. Permission form ctd: • There does not need to be a waiver included because it is a very safe environment for young children. It is accessible for children with both physical and mental disabilities.

  19. Utilize the Experience • Students will participate in the activities throughout the exhibits, primarily Body Works. • Students will think about and answer the Driving Question. • Students will explore other areas, learn more, and create an appreciation for learning through fun activities.

  20. Experience is Important • Students come to the class with varying degrees of background knowledge and experience. Further experience gives those without experience more, and enriches the experiences of other who may have an experience in this. • It is hard to conceptualize the systems of the body, therefore a fieldtrip where the students act as the systems will deepen their knowledge and understanding of their own bodies. • Students learn through doing, therefore it is very important to bring them to experiences and experiences to them.

  22. Misconceptions • We remember learning the material from a book, but we both only started to recall the information once we were actively engaged in the activities that were there. This shows us that children learn best and remember the information best through experiencing instead of reading straight from a book.

  23. Cross the Curricular • Reading: Books about Body systems • Writing: Have students write a 5 senses poem • Social Studies: Present statistics about Americans Health • Work the stats into Math class.
