  4. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum Assyria Israel • Like Jonah, Nahum was sent to Nineveh – capital city of Assyria. • 150yrs after Jonah • Since Jonah, Assyria had expanded her empire • After 3x invasions, Assyria had deported all 10x northern tribes of Israel into exile Nahum BC 612 663

  5. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum Assyria Israel • Assyrian were brutally cruel! • Shocking ferocity – uprooted whole populations into exile in parts of their empire. • Conquered leaders were tortured & horribly mutilated before executed… • All neighbours feared Assyria! • Assyrian empire lasted 750yrs & even managed to control Egypt at one stage Nahum BC 612 663

  6. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum Assyria Israel • Like Jesus, Nahum was likely from Galilee area. • Galilee was positioned on the crossroads of major trade routes to the east & to Africa • Like Jesus, Nahum was aware of international affairs Nahum BC 612 663

  7. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum Assyria Israel • Nahum went to Nineveh in about 620BC. • Bulk of his prophecy likely in later years – just before the fall of Nineveh • Today, Nineveh is a desert… where owls & hedgehogs & all wild beasts live – just as in Zeph2:13-15 • Lost for centuries, it was rediscovered by an Englishman in 1820 on west bank of Tigris River Nahum BC 612 Fall of Nineveh 663

  8. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum Assyria Israel • Nahum went to Nineveh in about 620BC. • Never returned – his tomb is found on the banks of the Tigris River – revered by Arabs who believe he was a holy man of God. • Capernaum = village of Nahum • Like Nineveh, Capernaum was unrepentant. (Math11:23) Nahum BC 612 Fall of Nineveh 663

  9. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum • Nahum’s message: • Zephaniah spoke of Nineveh’s destruction without actually specifying when it would happen – Nahum finally told the Assyrians that they were finished! • Difference between Jonah & Nahum was that God would not let them off the hook this time. Both described Him as being ‘slow to anger’, but Nahum’s message was that now time had run out..! • While God’s anger is simmering, it can be turned away – BUT once it boils over, nothing can stop it. • Nah3:19

  10. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum • Nahum’s question posed..? • If account of Jonah’s asks the question if God controls nature; then • The account of Nahum asks the question if God controls history..? Acts17:26

  11. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah Assyria Israel Nahum BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  12. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Zephaniah: • of royal blood (Hezekiah). • = (Hb) hidden God. • Did his mom hide him away when royal children were being sacrificed to god Molech..? BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  13. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Zephaniah: • Since Hezekiah, Judah nation had drifted far away from God: child sacrifice; worship of god Molech; asherah poles; fertility cults; … • Manasseh ignored the warnings of Isaiah – banned him from preaching, & even ordered his execution later… • “idolatry always leads to immorality…” BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  14. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Zephaniah: • Manasseh died after reigning for 55yrs. • Succeeded by Amon: weak character who did nothing to change – was assassinated after only 2yrs on the throne. • Then Josiah became the youngest king at 8yrs. BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah God sent Zephaniah to prevent the nation from being exiled for their sin – like with their northern brothers…

  15. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Zephaniah: • Voice of prophecy had been silent for 70yrs – NO word ever since the death of Hezekiah & murder of Isaiah… BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  16. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Zephaniah’s message: • His whole message revolved around ‘the Day of the Lord’ – mentioned 23x times… = the day of God’s judgement; of putting things right. • He calls for change to avoid God’s anger that is simmering under His lid BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  17. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Zephaniah’s message: • That all the Nations threatening Judah will be judged by Him – He is the Judge of the whole world, & He will judge them for their attitude to Judah. • Not only does God judge foreign nations, but he also uses them to discipline Judah… BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  18. “The Next Rescue…”Zephaniah • Applying Zephaniah’s message today: • The Day of Judgement for the whole world is coming after death. • The Day of Judgement will come 1st for God’s people then for the world. BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah

  19. “The Next Rescue…”Habakkuk Israel Nahum BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah Habakkuk

  20. “The Next Rescue…”Habakkuk • Habakkuk: • = (Hb) one who embraces; clings – describes his relationship with God. • A man of great faith; deeply rooted in the religious traditions of Israel. • Seems like NO word from God in 20yrs since Zephaniah..? BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Habakkuk

  21. “The Next Rescue…”Habakkuk • Habakkuk: • Told to write his message in large letters on tablets. • Part of his prophecy was even set to music… • Unusual prophetic book: most often God addresses His people through the prophet; but here the prophet addresses God directly – the people are not involved in this conversation… BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Habakkuk

  22. “The Next Rescue…”Habakkuk • Habakkuk: • Full of quotable quotes. • He wrestles with basic questions that all thinking believers ask: • Why do the innocent suffer while the guilty go free? • Why doesn’t God do something about the mess in the world today..? BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Habakkuk eg: interrogatory prayer

  23. “The Next Rescue…”Habakkuk • Habakkuk: • Have you ever conversed with God? • Have you heard HIM answer you..?

  24. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah Israel Nahum BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah Habakkuk Jeremiah

  25. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: • = (Hb) to ‘build up’ OR to ‘throw down’… (eg: raise; raze) • Personal life & struggles shown in greater depth & detail than any other OT prophet. • Many find it daunting; difficult; or depressing to study… BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Jeremiah

  26. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: • Like John the Baptist, he was set aside to be a prophet while still in his mother’s womb. • Under the judgement of God over the house of Eli, he started early (17yrs?)… • Loved nature! BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Jeremiah

  27. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: • A member of the priestly household of Hilkiah (2Kings22). • He started preaching in the 7th century BC – almost at the end of the life of the 2x tribes in the south – who went into exile in 586BC. • The 10x tribes of the north had been taken into exile by Assyria. • He was the last prophet to warn that it was almost too late… BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Given the choice of going to live in exile in Babylon or staying in Judah, he ended-up kidnapped by Jews in Egypt… Jeremiah

  28. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: • Although he was one of Josiah’s contemporaries, the King’s Books don’t mention Jeremiah… • Nor did he comment on the young King’s reforms – almost as if he realised that a reform ordered by the King did not change the people’s hearts… • Jeremiah did the bulk of his work under the rule of the next 4x wicked Kings that followed Josiah. BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Jeremiah

  29. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: • Many times his words express the feeling of “It’s too late!” – BUT he also brings this tiny ray of hope if they repent… • eg: Jerm18 – the clay is the problem; & hard hearts… BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Jeremiah

  30. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: • Communicated mostly in poetry from God’s heart to reach the reader’s heart. • When God communicates in prose He is communicating His thghts from His mind to the mind of the reader. • Bible is NOT scientific only, but also very emotional..! BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Jeremiah

  31. “The Next Rescue…”Jeremiah • Jeremiah: some pictures… • Jerm13 – the loincloth. • Jerm27 – wearing an ox yoke. • Jerm32 – buy land..? BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Jeremiah

  32. “The Next Rescue…”Nahum; Zephaniah; Habakkuk; Jeremiah Israel Nahum BC Judah 627 621 612 663 640 589 586 Zephaniah Habakkuk Jeremiah
