  1. Environmental Science The Study of Ecology

  2. Introduction Who is the audience? • Grade 6 Science Class • Biology Unit / Environmental • This project will serve as a review and reinforcement of previously introduced material •The focus is on the following terms: • Ecology, population, community, ecosystem, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, scavenger, and habitat. Objectives • Students will demonstrate understanding of the interactions of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms in ecosystems. • Students will be able to identify populations of organisms within an ecosystem and the factors that contribute to their survival within that ecosystem. By: Denise M. Legghio

  3. Definitions Ecology:The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment

  4. Population: A group of individuals of the same species that live together in the same area at the same time

  5. Community: All of the populations of different species that live and interact in an area

  6. Ecosystem: A community of organisms and their nonliving environment

  7. Herbivore: A consumer that eats plants

  8. Carnivore: A consumer that eats animals

  9. Omnivore: A consumer that eats a variety of organisms

  10. Scavenger: An animal that feeds on the bodies of dead animals

  11. Habitat: The environment where an organism lives

  12. Now, are you ready to practice what you’ve reviewed? Ecology is: • The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment • A community of organisms and their nonliving environment • The environment where an organism lives Review Terms
