  1. Final Case Study: Joey By: Liz Werner Ryan Manning Larissa Medenis Melissa Fragoso Frances Rickard

  2. Why Joey? • Joey is a student in a regular 1st grade education class • On one of his first reading assessment Joey scored a 2% with the average being a 58% • The district benchmark wants every student to be able to read at 90% or better • After seeing his extremely low score we felt our efforts, and the help of assistive technology devices, could raise his reading proficiency

  3. Joey’s Present Level of Performance • Diagnosed with dyslexia • Family history of dyslexia • As of April, Joey was reading below his grade level • Scored below the first grade average in a spelling assessment

  4. Strengths & Learning Needs • Math is at grade level however as the topics get more challenging, Joey is having trouble keeping up • Able to successfully complete assignments independently • He can “take words apart” but not put them together • He has learned to compensate for his visual deficit and strengthened his auditory skills

  5. How to Collaborate With a Team • Team collaboration with: • Principal • School Psychologist • Reading Specialist • Social Worker • Occupational Therapist • Speech and Language Teacher • Special Education Teacher

  6. How to Collaborate With a Team • Have Joey get involved in different programs and monitor progress • AIMS WEB • “Earobics” • Reading services with a reading specialist

  7. How to Modify Curriculum & Instruction • Teacher Assistant to help with reading assignments • Clear directions with pictures to aid • When reading in a big book, help Joey by isolating key words with items or a pointer • Fly swatter & Highlighter tape examples • Manipulatives in Math Class • Guided reading group books

  8. How to Monitor Joey’s Progress • Regular observational assessments • Monitoring improvements or difficulties in various assessments and test scores • Every 6-8 weeks • New assessments & tests once scores plateau • Special Education Testing Services • Creating an IEP

  9. Assistive Technology Devices: Spaceman & Fly Swatter • Both are used so Joey can isolate and distinguish particular words in a sentence • Both are cheap and easy to create even for a classroom as a whole
