Country and Capital • El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. • Capital is San Salvador, also the country’s biggest city. • El Salvador has a population of about 6.2 million people • It borders the Pacific Ocean to its left, and Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala to its right

  3. Flag • The flag of El Salvador is pure blue over white over blue flag with the state's coat of arms The coat of arms has five flags around the triangle and green branches. Text around it says: REPUBLICA DE EL SALVADOR EN LA AMERICA CENTRAL. In the middle of the triangle above the cap is the date 15 DE SET DE 1821 (15th of September, 1821), the independence day.

  4. Independence • In 1821 the territory of Guatemala (which included El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) revolted against the Spanish for its Independence. After the United Provinces of Central America was formed (a culmination of the above countries) and then dissolved in 1839 El Salvador became an Independent Republic

  5. Important Historical Fact: Salvadoran Civil War • The Salvadoran Civil War lasted from 1980-1992. It was fought between the U.S. backed military government, and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) which was a group of five left wing militia groups. It was the second largest civil war, of Central America, and as a result some 75,000 people were killed

Local Holidays • January 16 Día de los Acuerdos de Paz (Peace Accords Day) celebrates the truce between the government and the guerilla groups ending the civil war. • August 1–7 Fiestas de agosto (August Festivals) Week-long festival in celebration of El Salvador del Mundo, patron saint of San Salvador

  7. Famous Man Made Structure:Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo • The Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo is located on the Plaza las Américas in San Salvador.

  8. Environment • El Salvador is located on the Ring of Fire, a ring of volcanoes and tectonic activity that surrounds the edges of the Pacific. Due to this El Salvador experiences earthquakes of varying degrees and volcanic activity. Its location on the Pacific coast also means its subject to violent storms, and severe drought made worse by the El nina and El nino seasons.

  9. Famous Man: Cayetano Carpio • Cayetano Carpio (August 6, 1918 – April 12, 1983) was the leader of the FMLN. He led the Communist leftist group in Guerilla actions against the government because he thought that it was time to reform. He committed suicide on April, 12, 1983 after being found guilty of murdering fellow leaders.

  10. Famous Woman: Ana María • Ana María (17 May 1929 – 6 April 1983) was the second in command of the FMLN guerilla forces in El Salvador. She was eventually killed by comrades that wished to prolong the war instead of stopping it. During her life she was a revolutionary icon to women in El Salvador

  11. Cuisine • Chicken and shrimp paella: A dish that includes chicken and shrimp and sweet bell peppers. • Pupusas: thick handmade corn totillas stuffed with an assortment of meats and cheeses. • Panes con Pavo (turkey sandwiches)
