  1. Disability Studies and Inclusive Education Phil FergusonUniversity of Missouri St. LouisPresented at the 2005 meeting of the American Educational Research Association Montreal, Canada This material is available in alternative formats upon request.

  2. Develops Valued Dispositions Disability Studies helps develop teacher dispositions that support ALL students’ learning and achievement • Moves instruction from pathologized remediation toward reflective practice and practical wisdom (phronesis). “Practical wisdom is greater than simply conceptually knowing what to do, it is the highest fulfillment of moral virtue. One with phronesis has perfected the habit of actualizing moral knowledge in appropriate action.”

  3. Disability as Difference Disability Studies expands understanding of disabilities as socially constructed ways to live in world rather than individual impairments to be overcome. • Continued role for academic skill development and academic achievements • Disability moves from individual trait to curricular content and social arrangement.

  4. Difference as Disability Disability Studies expands understanding of society and diversity by viewing discrimination through the lens of disability “[W]hile disabled people can be considered one of the minority groups historically assigned inferior status and subjected to discrimination, disability has functioned for all such groups as a sign of and justification for inferiority” (Baynton, 2001, p. 35).

  5. Difference as Disability (cont.) Disability Studies sheds new light on how social institutions such as our public schools employ a “deficit model” to shape interactions with many children and families who differ from the mainstream, whether or not a “real” disability is involved.

  6. Builds Community Capacity Disability Studies builds capacity for community within schools and classrooms by providing a social and cultural context for universal design of curriculum & instruction. • Provides a conceptual frame for thinking in consistent ways about students with very different impairments and disability labels
