Power Generation

Power Generation. A basic Electric Generator. Something (steam, water, wind) spins the turbine which makes the rotor (which is made of a magnet) spin. The rotor spins inside the stator (made of copper wire). This pulls electrons and creates current electricity which travels through the wires.

  1. Power Generation

  2. A basic Electric Generator • Something (steam, water, wind) spins the turbine which makes the rotor (which is made of a magnet) spin. • The rotor spins inside the stator (made of copper wire). This pulls electrons and creates current electricity which travels through the wires.

  3. Major Forms of generation • It take a lot of energy to spin the turbines. • Nuclear/fossil fuel – heat from reactions is used to make steam to spin the turbine • Hydroelectric – uses falling water • Wind – uses wind • Tidal – uses the moving tides • Geothermal – uses the heat trapped underground to make steam • Solar – uses photovoltaic cells to convert to electrical energy

  4. Electricity in Ontario

  5. Today’s Tasks • Using your OPG How it Works Kit you will complete the worksheet given to you.
