Introduction • You will be placed in teams of 3 or 4 • You may create up to 3 robots. • It is possible to create 1 robot with 3 removable components; 2 robots with different attachments; 3 separate robots or any other arrangement • Come up with a team name, and design your team flag • You have 15 minutes to come up with your name and flag

  4. Event 1 – Line Follower Challenge Construct and program a robot capable of following a black line Your robot must navigate a course following a single black line of electrical tape on white butcher paper The line may have twists, turns, and corners

  5. Event 1 – Line Follower Rules The timer will begin the trial by saying “On your mark, get set, GO”!!!! The timer will stop the time when any part of the robot reaches the end of the line. Instructors will record the time it takes to complete the line, or if they do not complete it, they will record how far the robot went, by making a light pencil mark The order of winners will be determined by least time to finish the line, and secondarily by how far they went on the line for robots that did not complete the line. Your robot will have a maximum of 4 minutes to complete the line

  6. Event 1 – Line Follower Hints Put your light sensors close to the ground. Make sure your robot isn't tricked by bumps or wrinkles in the paper. Don't lose the line! Practice curves, straight lines, and corners. Make your program adjustable, in case you need to make changes

Tow-bar Event 2 – Tug-o-War The robots must be strong, sturdy robots designed to pull another robot when connected by a 60 cm string There must be some kind of tow-bar or hook that will allow a robot to connect to the paperclip on the tow-string. The robot needs to be connected to the string on the side of the robot facing the line. This event will be held in a round robin style with winners advancing to the next round.

Event 2 – Tug-o-War Rules Robots start ~30cm from the start line Robots must be safe – they should not have pieces that fly off If any part of the robot crosses the centerline, or any part comes off the robot, that robot loses that round After being triggered, the robot must wait 2 seconds before moving If after 1 minute, no robot has crossed the center line, the round is a draw In the event of a draw, the winner is determined by a tie-breaking round, where the distance of the robot from the center line is measured, and the robot closest to the centerline at the end of the minute loses. If the judge determines that your robot is not capable of pulling or moving, it will be disqualified.

  12. Event 3 – Drag Race You must build and program a robot car that can travel at a high speed in a straight line. Make your robot as light as possible. Try to program your robot so that it stops by itself to avoid crashing.

  13. Event 3 – Drag Race Rules The entire robot begins behind the starting line. The instructor says "On your mark, get set, go" and begins the timer. A robot is triggered to begin its program by one of the builders. Robots may be triggered by hand or by a signal such as sound or light. The distance between the start and finish line will be 4 meters The timer will stop when any part of the robot reaches the finish line. Projectiles are not permitted (a robot can't shoot anything to the finish line).
