  • NGC 6302

  • Rolling cauldrons of gas heated to 36000 f

  • Tearing across space at more than 600000 mi/hr

  • Dying star 5x bigger than the sun is at the center

Carina nebula
Carina Nebula

  • NGC 3372

  • A star forming region in Sagittarius-Carina arm of the milky way

  • Super nova activity is increasing in carina

  • 6 possible neutron stars detected

  • Discovered in 1787 by William Herschel

  • Resembles a persons head covered by a hood

  • Planetary nebula

  • Gas composed outer layers of a star about 10000 years ago

  • Offers evidence of violent processes at work

  • Just off center is a star 45x more massive than the sun

  • 11000 light years away toward the cassiopeia constellation

  • Hydrogen and sulfur gas heated and ionized by intense ultraviolet radiation

  • Contains 4 massive stars known as the trapezium

  • Stellar winds shaped the edges

  • Eleven or more concentric rings, or shells, around it

  • Observations suggest the star ejected a series of pulses at 1500 year intervals

  • Some suggest rings come from magnetic activity like the sun spot cycles

  • X rays reveal hundreds of young stars clustered at the center

  • Central cluster formed then expanded out
