Definition • cultural heritage refers to monuments, groups of buildings, and sites with historical, aesthetic, archaeological, scientific, ethnological, or anthropological value. • Natural heritage covers outstanding physical, biological and geological formations, habitats of threatened species and areas with scientific, conservation or aesthetic value.

  11. World Heritage • United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972. This is to raise the awareness over the globe of the outstanding universal value of cultural and natural heritage, to recognize that they are a part of world heritage and to make sure they can be preserved. • Until July 2007, 184 countries have already been registered as State Parties of this Convention and there are 851 cultural or natural heritage all over the world, which are included on the World Heritage List.

World Heritage in China • In the 29th World Heritage Committee Session held in July 2005, Macau Historical District was given the title of world cultural heritage. 31 places of China have already been listed as world heritage, which made China possess the third most world heritages in the world.

Historical monuments in Hong Kong • According to the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance, the Antiquities Authority (who is the Secretary for Development) may legally declare a place to be a protected monument. The Antiquities Authority is then empowered to prevent alterations, or to impose suitable conditions upon any proposed alterations to protect the monument. Until June 2007, there are a total of 82 declared monuments.
