  3. Adinkra Symbols • Adinkra are visual symbols created by the Akan of Ghana, Africa. • The symbols represent ideas or concepts like wisdom, strength, etc. • The symbols are printed on fabric that is woven with a grid pattern before hand • Typically made for royalty to wear at religious ceremonies, but it’s purpose has been modified to tell a story or express a thought

  4. Notice the stitching pattern?

  5. What are we going to do today? Place your 12” x 18” paper longways (it’s shorter than it is wide) Going down the short side, measure 4” and make a hash mark (tiny line) Measure 4” down from the first line and draw a second hash line Do the same down the middle and other side Connect the hash marks to make straight lines across the middle Now, do the same on the top and bottom, but measure 6” for each hash mark and then connect them

  6. Next On the lines going up and down, make 2 to 3 lines close to each of them, so it looks thicker Using the ruler, trace all the lines with sharpie The sharpie is permanent, do not get it on your clothes!!! Turn in your sharpie and write your name on the back of your paper with PENCIL. Put your paper on the shelf and clean up. First clean and quiet table will get Monet Money!!!

  7. What to do next? Using crayon, create the colorful stitching that goes longways across your “cloth” Use bright colors and create a pattern with your stitching

  12. Printmaking • You will get a little square of foam • Using your pencil, lightly draw the outline of the symbol you chose • When you are satisfied with your symbol, use your pencil to Etch away the foam • If you take away the outside of the symbol, the symbol will be black • If you take a way the inside of the symbol, it will be white • It’s your choice 
