  3. Being fake is common. It’s the degree and extend that differs.

  4. Authentic ChristianityLessons from the Parable of the weeds Matt 13:24-30 & 36-43

  5. 3 agri-parables. • Good soil and bad soil-Parable of the Sower (v1-23). Seed = spyro. • Good seed and bad seed-Parable of the weeds (v24-30, v36-43). Seed = sperma. • Parable of the mustard seed and the yeast (v31-32). • The parables are interconnected in their teachings.

  6. The Kingdom in parables. • 3 parables on the growth of the Kingdom (sower, wheat & weeds, mustard seed/yeast in dough). • 2nd parable emphasizes a future judgment. • 2 parables on the value of the Kingdom (treasure and pearl of great price). • Final parable repeats emphasis on future judgment (verse 50 is identical to verse 42).

  7. The devil uses deception to mix bad seed with good seed- truth with lies, good with bad.

  8. Over time the weeds are revealed among the wheat.

  9. Authentic Christianity • Going to church regularly does not make me a Christian.

  10. ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; Their teachings are but rules taught be men.’ Matt 15:8-9 (quoting Isaiah 29:13)

  11. Bribing you to become a Christian?

  12. Authentic Christianity • Going to church regularly does not make me a Christian. • Believing I am a Christian does not make me a Christian.

  13. Parable of the Sower • Seed on rocky ground believed (13:20). • Seed among thorns believed (13:22).

  14. Names you don’t give to your kids… • Judas • Demas • Ananias • Sapphira

  15. Many will say on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophecy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ Matt 7:22-23

  16. Understanding God’s Kingdom. • There will be intermingling of saved and unsaved people in God’s present Kingdom. • Both will be allowed to flourish. • There will be separation of saved and unsaved people in God’s future Kingdom.

  17. The test of authenticity for Christians. • How we conduct ourselves daily in this present life. • How this present life is governed by expectations of our future life.

  18. v37-38a The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world…

  19. Authentic Christianity is reflected in how we live out our lives at work and at home, not just in our service at church. Phil 2:12 Therefore my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

  20. Authentic Christians persevere in the faith despite troubles, struggles and hardships in their daily lives.

  21. “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the words of life…” Phil 2:14-16

  22. V 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. In this world, wheat will be with weeds, sheep with goats, good fish with bad fish, apples with…..

  23. “From this we observe what raging and furious people we have been these many years, in that we desired to force others to believe: the Turks with the sword, heretics with fire, the Jews with death, and thus outroot the tares by our own power, as if we were the ones who could reign over hearts and spirits, and make them pious and right, which God’s word alone must do. But by murderwe separate the people from the Word, so that it cannot possibly work upon them and we bring thus, with one stroke a double murder upon ourselves, as far as it is in our power, namely, in that we murder the body for time and the soul for eternity, and afterwards say we did God a service by our actions, and wish to merit something special in heaven.” Martin Luther The Sermons of Martin Luther, Vol 11, pg100-106 (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House 1906)
