    A child’s development is based on their genes (what you were NATURALLY born with)

  • Nurture:

    A child’s development is influenced by their environment and the people they interact with

  • Risk: A disturbance in the child’s life that affects the course of their development

    Ex: An accidental head injury, an abusive parent, an unstimulating daycare

  • Resilience: The ability to bounce back after a traumatic event

  • Continuous Development

    A child’s thinking, language, and social behavior gradually advances

  • Discontinuous Development

    A child’s development progresses through stages, where developmental milestones happen abruptly

Unique customs, values, and beliefs on how to properly raise your child and the overall goals for their development

Ex: how assertive you were allowed to be at home, if you went to preschool before kindergarten

  • A child’s development in 1 domain directly effects other domains

    Ex: A child’s physical growth influences their social and emotional development. A taller child may be given more responsibilities by the teacher or may be asked to lead a group of peers more frequently than a smaller child
