EXPECTATIONS OF LEADERS - HEAD GIRL • DUTIES: CHARACTERISTICS NEEDED: • Represent girls and school See big picture-subordinate self • Lead prefects, run meetings Delegate well • Address school (speeches) People skills,solve probs, prioritise • Head up discipline and spirit Be organised and work hard • Develop prefects into team Have courage of convictions Able to control groups, individuals DEPUTIES • DUTIES: CHARACTERISTICS NEEDED: • Support/deputise for head girl Very organised, hard working • Organise duties Happy to work behind scenes • Run pref. admin – minutes, lists People skills – tackle underperformers among peers

HOUSE CAPTAINS • DUTIES: CHARACTERISTICS NEEDED: • Lead house, team Ability to motivate others • Supply teams and competitors Be organised, good time manage. • Bond house members Willing to get to know girls (all grades) Participate in school activities PREFECTS • DUTIES: CHARACTERISTICS NEEDED: • Role model - school rules & discipline Strong desire to serve school • Stand up for principles Confidence • Guide girls by examples & instruction Hard worker, good time management • Be ambassadors on public occasions Friendly, but firm CLASS PREFECTS • DUTIES: CHARACTERISTICS NEEDED: • As directed by teachers in phase Enjoy working with children • Lead younger girls to prayers Be responsible and reliable • Help to foster spirit in class Prepared to help after hours if required • Role model of behaviour & • helpfulness to younger girls

  15. MOTIVATION • Play the HOYT clip(www.youtube.com/watch?v=flRvsO8m_KI) • Discuss External Motivation e.g. Leadership badge Internal Motivation e.g. Passion to serve your school. You need to feel secure, confident, enjoy what you are doing, feel you are developing & improving

  16. TEAM WORK • Identifying the personality of team members is a key to understanding how they function best in a group setting. • Effective team work is learning ways of working together as a team, toward a common goal. • Team task (handout)

HOUSE TEAM TASK • Divide your house team as follows: • Manager (you oversee and make the final decisions) • Designer (design the ball gown and sash) • Manufacturer (take the design and use the crepe paper and sash to create the finished products) • Slogan writer (create the house motto of not more than 5 words) • Motivator ( in charge of keeping the team motivated and positive) • Mediator (you are in charge of mediating any conflict) • Musicians ( no actual musical instruments may be used but tables, chairs, stationery etc can be used to create musical sounds and rhythm.) • Lyricists(optional) (you may have one or more people in each category)

MATERIALS: • Coloured crepe paper & safety pins (gown fabric & fasteners) • Plain white sash (slogan) & a set of permanent markers (slogan & design gown) and flip chart paper (design gown on this paper) • No other materials may be used • TASK: • Design the House Captain’s evening gown that she will wear to the annual House Captain’s formal dinner. • Gown should promote the Captain’s school house. • Focus on the values promoted by their house or just celebrate its past successes. • Team must come up with a slogan for their house that the team member will wear as a sash over the evening gown.

  19. Time: • +/- 40 minutes = • 5-10 minutes organisation • 20-25 minutes preparation time • 10 minutes manufacturing and dressing (1 minute presentation to the audience). Video the fashion parade and play it back to the girls at a later stage. Discuss effective leadership and the importance of team work.
