  1. Significant Dates • Job postings begin: October 3, 2011 • Interviews begin: October 18, 2011 • Work term begins: January 2, 2012

  2. Email • All correspondence (interview schedules/job offers) will be with your Mohawk email account • Mohawk College e-mail address on your resume • Create an email file for tracking purposes

  3. How many jobs can you apply for? • Apply to as many jobs as you wish – be flexible! • Apply ONLY if you have genuine interest and can meet the requirements (e.g. location, use of vehicle, etc.)

  4. Applying For Jobs • Once the job closes, it’s gone! • We encourage employers to post & interview early • The more jobs you apply to the better chance of getting interviews • Employer selects candidates to interview

  5. Notice of Interviews • You will receive a copy of the interview schedule via e-mail if you applied to the job • Mark your calendar – date, time and interview location • Only the students listed on the interview schedule have been invited to the interview • Confirm your interview attendance, with me, via email (preferred) or phone

  6. Rescheduling Interviews • May be altered several times (even daily) • Frequent e-mail checking due to changes • Contact your Consultant immediately if unable to attend • Interviews on campus or at the company’s site

  7. Interviews • If you are granted an interview YOU MUST ATTEND!!! • Bring your portfolio • Research the company • Be on time; allow for contingencies • Attire/Attitude/body language

  8. Interview Preparation • Prepare thoughtful questions ahead of time • Avoid yes/no answers – elaborate on your responses • Research the company/interviewer • Interview skills tapes are available the library

  9. Salary • Pay rates vary • Look beyond pay but know your bottom line • Consider the value of real work experience, references, and full time potential

  10. Not Getting Interviews? • Review your resume: spelling/grammar/ structure/flow • Is your resume targeted? • Don’t wait – have someone look it over

  11. Not Getting Offers? • First Impression – appearance, firm hand shake, eye contact, good posture, SMILE! • Replay the interview; asking right questions? • First Impression – on time, appearance, firm hand shake, eye contact, good posture, SMILE!

  14. Job Offers • Are made to you via e-mail from me • Start date and hourly salary • 24 hours to respond to me with decision • Communicate with me directly

  15. Accepting the Offer • Consultant will confirm with employer • You can pick up Confirmation Letter at the Job Centre Reception Desk • Send a thank you letter to the employer to re-affirm your acceptance of the offer • Confirmation Letter

  16. Policies Low Participation Status: • Less than 20% application rate • No contact with Consultant

  17. Own Job – Why? • Develop Job Search Skills • You can focus on a specific type of job/company/city • Some companies want to hire this way

  18. Found Own Job • Program related • Complete and submit Own Job Approval Form • Consultant’s approval required for credit

  19. Networking Talk to people you know: • Friends & Relatives • Former employers • Customers • Teachers

  20. Other Sources • Trade & Technical Magazines • Yellow Pages and Newspapers • Professional Associations • Company Web Sites • Job Posting Websites • Directories in the Career Resource Centre
