  2. Pre-Reading • With your group, create a list of important natural resources that we use on a daily basis.

  3. The Future of Resources • What is going to happen when we run out of these resources? • Fresh water • Oil (used to make gasoline) • Trees • Clean oxygen • Phosphorous (used in fertilizer) • Coal (used in electricity)

  4. Predict – Half Time Slip • Get to know your book. • Look at the front cover. • Read the back cover. • Look at the table of contents. Name: Homeroom: What do you predict this novel will be about?

  5. Let’s get started! • Read “The Instructions” pages 1-3. • Homework: • How long are the people supposed to stay in the city of Ember? • What are the instructions for? • How did the box get lost?

  6. Noun • Definition – a noun is a person, place, thing or idea • Examples:

  7. Proper Noun • Definition – a SPECIFIC person, place or thing • Proper nouns are capitalized. • Examples:

  8. Find the Nouns • In the city of Ember, the sky was always dark. The only light came from great flood lamps mounted on the buildings and at the tops of poles in the middle of the larger squares. When the lights were on, they cast a yellowish glow over the streets; people walking by threw long shadows that shortened and then stretched out again. When the lights were off, as they were between nine at night and six in the morning, the city was so dark that people might as well have been wearing blindfolds.

  13. Pronouns • Definition: A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun. • Example: Bob, Dave and Kevin were late to the minion meeting. They were late to the minion meeting.

  14. Antecedent • Definition: The word of group of words that a pronoun represents. • Example: Olaf found his nose. pronoun antecedent

  15. More Examples • When Stuart saw a banana, Stuart screamed with joy! • When Stuart saw a banana, he screamed with joy! • There is a scratch on my whiteboard. It makes it difficult to write.
