Review of Course Objectives • Japan 234 aims at continuing to introduce the basic four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) of modern Japanese. • The purpose of the course is to build a solid foundation in Japanese grammar while developing communicative skills in Japanese. • Classroom activities and homework assignments are designed to help students achieve a practical command of the language.

  6. Classroom Norms • Choose to be Responsible • 1. Speak politely to others, incorporate Japanese culturally appropriate behavior. • 2. Treat each other with kindness & cooperate. • 3. Be prepared for class-> Read material in advance • 4. Make a good effort at your work and request help if you need it. • 5. Speak Japanese as much as possible unless you ask and are given permission by Sensei to speak in English.

  7. Changes to expect • Combining quiz sections • Reducing final assessment from skit project and oral interview to just the oral interview • Posting materials on website instead of handouts—less paper! • Be prepared to participate more!

Next Steps • You’ll need to pre-read and study, review often so that you can be prepared to participate in class. • We will continue on schedule with quizzes and tests, but they will look very different. • Be sure to practice writing kanji often, there are no shortcuts for learning to WRITE kanji.

  11. ~てくれる • When the verbs くれるor 下さるare used, the recipient is always the speaker or the speaker’s うちーgroup. The particle が is often used as the topic marker in this type of sentence because the sentence often expresses who IS the person who has offered or will offer the favor. • ルームメートがこの漢字を教えてくれました。 • 伊藤先生がこの漢字を教えてくださいました • 山田さんが弟に本をよんでくれました。
