  2. K-W-L Chart Begin by filling out the “K” section of your K-W-L chart for this section.

  3. Review In section 1, you read about the constant fighting between the Israelites and the Canaanites. The tribes of Israel longed for peace. Many thought the way to peace was to unite as one nation. Partner check: Shades of meaning. What does the word “longed” mean in this sentence? Why was the word “longed” chosen instead of a synonym?

  4. BIG IDEA (s) The Israelites chose a king to unite them against their enemies. King David built an Israelite empire and made Jerusalem his capital city. The Israelites were conquered and forced to leave Israel and Judah.

  10. I. The Israelites Choose a King a. around 1000 B.C. the Israelites were not the strongest people in Canaan. The Philistines were. b. Israelites believed they needed a king 1. A king would unite them and make them stronger than the Philistines.

  11. A. The Rule of King Saul • Samuel (Judge and Prophet) was asked to chose a king • a. Israelites though he was instructed by God • 2. Samuel warned that a king was a bad idea • a. Israelites didn’t listen; still wanted a king • 3. Chose Saul as their king • a. Powerful warrior • b. But, he disobeyed God’s commandments • c. Samuel had to chose new king, King David

  13. Independent Work • Read the biography on page 208 about King David. After you have read the biography, research 2-3 U.S. presidents who built their reputations on military power just like King David. You will share your findings with your partner.

  14. This Week’s Challenge Write me a one page story/description of how you would build an empire. What kind of ruler would you be? What kind of laws would you enact? What issues might you face? How would you overcome such issues? (30 Roebucks)

  19. B. What Caused Israel’s Fall? 1. 722 B.C, Assyrians conquer Israel a. scattered ten tribes *This is where we get the very, very famous “lost tribes of Israel” from Thus, today’s Judaism developed from the tribes of Judah (who were not scattered and mixed with other people during this time)

  20. C. Why Judah Fell 1. 620 B.C. Egyptians conquered Judah a. Jews kept king, but paid tribute to Egypt 2. 605 B.C., Chaldeans conquered Egypt, and thus Judah a. Egypt and the Jews tried to unite to rebel against the Chaldeans 1. 597 Nebuchadnezzar re- conquered Judah and captured city of Jerusalem a. He made 10,000 Jews leave and he picked his own Jewish king 3. 586 B.C. , Jews tried to revolt again a. Chaldeans crushed Jerusalem b. Chaldeans destroyed Jewish temple c. took Jews to Babylon 1. Became know as “Babylonian Captivity”

  21. Summary • Saul was the first king of the Israelites. He united the 12 tribes into one kingdom. • King David built an Israelite empire and made Jerusalem his capital. Solomon built a great temple at Jerusalem, but after he died, the Israelites split into two kingdoms-Israel and Judah. • The Assyrians and then the Chaldeans conquered Israel and Judah, and forced many Israelites to leave their homeland.

  22. Connection to Today The city of Jerusalem and Judah are still important cities to this day. This is not the last time that people will fight and die over this land. Even in modern times, people are still fighting for control of this land, and people are still dying because of this fighting.
