BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

Involving YE Students in Service Projects

By Rtn. Ivan L. Vianna

District 4760 - BRAZIL

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE SWITZERLAND

slide2

What is the objective of this session?

This session is intended to explore ideas for maximizing the opportunities for YE students to participate in service projects during their exchange year

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide3

YE students have already been involved in service projects, this is not new.

Many host clubs have already used not only inbound but also their future outbound students to participate in their service projects.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

It could be a fund-raising activity such as BB-Q or a school drive for YE candidates, a visit to potential host families, a musical performance, a polio vaccination drive or anything else.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide4

Our District 4760 in Brazil may report several examples of different activities YE students have participated. Let us show three of them:

  • YE from BR in Thailand
  • YE from the Netherlands in BR
  • YE from JAPAN D-2770 in BR

YE FELICIA from the Netherlands

YE Felicia Von Maltzahn from D-1600, the Netherlands, created a violin school for poor children at her host city in Brazil.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

Most of these children had NEVER had any

access to music and some were homeless.

She conducted a performance of that violin group before the end of her exchange year in our nation capital, Brasilia. She left behind not only a music school but also

a great example to be followed.

Project “I do not throw garbage in the streets”

This project was created by YE Kurara Saegusa, from RC of Saitama, District 2770 in Japan, hosted by the RC BH Novas Gerações.

She was inspired by a similar project done in her home city in Japan. It happened in April 2010 in the streets of a fancy section of Belo Horizonte – a city of nearly 4 million people. Besides having full support of her host Club,

she was helped by otherYE students hosted in the

city and ROTEX students.

Project “I do not throw garbage in the streets”

This project was approved by the City Officers, it involved a large group to elaborate an educational kit. It was widely seen and advertised on the media. City officers estimated over 65,000 people were somehow touched by this projectdone during ONE day.

Kurara planted the seed of an action that will continue for several years after she returned to Japan, thanks to her host club members.

THEY ALL LEFT BEHIND

A LEGACY

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

“FRUIT” OF THEIR EXCHANGE YEAR, AS SHOWN IN CANADA`S DISTRICT 5370 TREE OF THE EXCHANGE YEAR

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide10

But why would they participate in a

service project?

  • RYE students do have strong leadership skill.
  • Challenge happens in life so it is never to be boring, they arrive to be overcomed: YE students like to be challenged, as any youth leader.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

  • They may also have more fun when committed to a service project while living abroad

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide11

AS SHOWN BEFORE, IT DEPENDS ON EACH ROTARY CLUB AND EACH

DISTRICT TO CHOOSE A PROJECT WHERE THEIR HOST STUDENT MAY

BE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

IN ANOTHER WORDS, IT MAY DEPENDS…

ON YOU!

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide12

NOW, IMAGINE IF ALL YOUTH EXCHANGE OFFICERS OF THE WORLD GET TOGETHER ON A PROJECT WITH THE STUDENTS: WHAT A HUGE POTENTIAL !

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide13

A WORLDWIDE ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE SERVICE PROJECT, THIS IS THE IDEA WE CAME HERE TODAY TO ASK YOU TO CONSIDER

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

YES, WE CAN!

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide14

NO NEED TO RE-INVENT THE WHEEL: AFTER ALL, RYEP IS ITSELF A GLOBAL PROJECT

IF WE ALL DECIDE TO ADD OUR UNITED EFFORTs TO ANOTHER ROTARY GLOBAL PROJECT, WE ARE WRITING HISTORY ON WHAT MAY BE OUR FIRST

GLOBAL Y.E. SERVICE PROJECT:

ShelterBox

For DISASTER RELIEF

slide16

ShelterBox was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian from U.K, and it has delivered more than 90,000 boxes since it started in April, 2000.

Some INFO on ShelterBox:

ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide17

The cost of a box is $1,000 including delivery direct to those who need it. Each box bears its own unique number so a donor can track its box all the way to the recipient country via the website.

More INFO on ShelterBox:

ShelterBox has grown to become the largest

Rotary Club project in the history of the organization. Rotarian support currently contributes an

estimated 50% of ShelterBox donations.

Around 5,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide have supported ShelterBox since it was launched.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide20

June 2010: a huge flood in northeast Brazil left 100,000 people homeless. ShelterBox came IMMEDIATELY

to help bringing 859 boxes, sheltering nearly 9,000 people

Latest deployment: Pakistan flood

Current UN estimates report that over 4 million people are without shelter, 6 million people do not have access to clean water and at least 3.5 million children are at risk of contracting deadly diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. (August 20, 2010)

Combining ShelterBox with Rotary YE students in a Global Project has a lot of potential for both:

ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT may be one of Rotary’s most admired program, both inside & outside Rotary.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

Students engaged on activities that will lead to get ShelterBoxes may have increase their self-esteem at a moment in life when that means a lot in their education.

Rotary Clubs may get more interested families for

hosting student as this Program is implemented as

media will give attention. Membership may also grown.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide23

We quote Rotary International Strategic Plan as it encourages all Rotarians to:

Advance the recognition and public image of Rotary

Expand membership globally in both numbers and quality

Increase Rotary’s capacity to provide service.

BRAZIL - DISTRICT 4760 RYEP

This Project is qualified to support the above goals. Also, as a project of any Rotary

Clubs it fits in the 5th Avenue of Service recently created: NEW GENERATIONS besides sharing COMMUNITY SERVICE AVENUE

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide24

The goals of this Global YE Project are:

It is a three year long Project: July 2010 to June 2013.

First year: July 2010 to June 2011 (NOW!!!)

BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760

Format and development of project with information sent to Districts and Clubs all over the RYE world;

Search of criativity to elaborate fund raising activities + creating a conscious priority of its importance to YEO Rotarians

At the end of this year, our goal would reach an amount of donation per YE student of US$ 100,00 or 10% of a ShelterBox.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide25

The goals of this Global YE Project are:

Second year: july 2011 to June 2012

Hopefully more known and recognized, the Project shall have a bigger media support on the actions of fund raising involving the inbound exchange students, host clubs and host families;

The goal is to reach a per capita donation of 30% of a ShelterBox cost, or US$ 300,00 throughout the year, what means US$ 25. a month per student.

BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760

Third and last year: july 2012 to june 2013

All YE hosted in that year who decided to participate would raise enough donation thru their combined efforts with YEOs, host families and club members that provide would ShelterBox50% of one kit , or US$ 500,00 or US$ 42.00 per month.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide26

The outcome of this Global YE Service Project may reach:

Total amount of donation in three years come to an amazing number of

US$ 7.200.000,00

(seven million, two hundred thousand dollars),

enough to provide

7.200 kits of ShelterBox!

slide27

More info on this Project:

  • Around 24,000 YE students may be asked to participate in over 60 countries - in 3 years. USA, Brazil, Argentina and Japan have already started it, as we have been told so.
  • ShelterBox created a YE Badge Challenge supporting this Project. More information on this will be given at the end of this presentation at the ShelterBox stand in this hotel area. Please stop by and learn more about it.

BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760

  • All donations will be made directly to ShelterBox which will use the funds for more kits that will be sent somewhere to attend the demand, at their procedures.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide28

The ShelterBox Youth Exchange Badge:

3 challenges to be achieved

1 – Give a presentation about ShelterBox at school or at host club or community. Download material will be available at internet site for the YE student.

2 – Fundraising for ShelterBox, for any amount will help to shelter a family who have lost everything.

BRASIL – P.I.J. DO D - 4760

3 – Research for a popular form of shelter in the host country specially at some aspects who might be of risk in case disaster strikes.

EEMA 2010 YEO CONFERENCE - ZURICH

slide29

This Project was inspired by Actress Mia Farrow presentation at 2009 Rotary Convention in Birmingham, when she told us about the genocyde in Darfur, Sudan. She asked Rotarians to be involved to help the fallen ones and frequently forgotten people - who are in dispair.
