Problem Statement • There are conditions where event and diagnostic reporting could be difficult during environmental conditions: • Poor coverage • Congested network • Interference • Configuration issues • In these cases, event and diagnostic reporting could be extremely useful. Solution Concept • A number of STA’s today have multiple network interfaces that provide TCP/IP connectivity: • Cellular/WLAN dual-mode phones • Laptops with Ethernet and WLAN adaptors • IEEE 802.11 infrastructures have management platforms that are IP addressable. • In the case where AP-STA communications are interrupted or impossible, why not provide IP transport for Event and Diagnostic reports. The Solution • In the Event/Diagnostic report request, the AP advertises an “Alternative Transport” sub-element, which contains a URI • If the STA cannot transmit Event/Diagnostic reports directly, it connects using the URI and posts the report to the address advertised by the AP. Example • IT is investigating a WLAN coverage problem and uses a non-AP STA with a WLAN and Ethernet adapters to collect some additional information. • The non-AP STA with MAC 00:ff:fd:00:00:01 has received a diagnostic report request from AP 00:ff:fe:00:00:10 and is in fringe coverage. The non-AP STA has an Ethernet adapter which is connected. • In the diagnostic report request, the AP advertises an alternative transport URI of http://www.myserver.mycompany.com. • The non-AP STA loses WLAN connectivity while trying to transmit a diagnostic report to the AP and determines that it can use an alternative transport mechanism to send the report over an Ethernet link. • The non-AP STA POSTs the diagnostic report as follows:  POST /wnm/msg/00-ff-fd-00-00-01/msg1 HTTP/1.1 Host: http://www.myserver.mycompany.com Content-Type: application/octet-stream Content-Encoding-Type: base64 Content-Length: ??
