Privacy Expertise • Serves as primary liaison to Corporate Audit and Compliance and community on federal and state regulations regarding Privacy. • Serve as an internal resource/consultant to the organization on privacy compliance related activities and serves as backup to the Security IT member when needed on security compliance related activities. • Maintain current knowledge of applicable federal and state health information privacy and security laws and accreditation standards. • Provides community support and education for privacy and security initiatives that impact the organization and its stakeholders.

  3. Employee Education If you are not already there, become a part of the new employee orientation. Create an article for your facility newsletter, or start one of your own and email it to Everyone. Do regular rounding of all areas of your facility When you see an opportunity to do mass education set up class, both open to all employees and specific departments Invite guest speakers to speak on topics: ex. Identity theft presented by OAG educator Make it personal to remember HIPAA/Privacy. Identity theft can happen to anyone & Medical Identity theft is on the rise.

OK – I Do Not Have Any Extra Time • But let’s look at the potential cost of not sharing and rounding on our people • $4.3 million in civil money penalty for violation – Cignet Health of Prince George’s County MD • AvMed Health Plan had 2 laptops stolen with 1.2 million members records on them. They provided the members free credit protection for 2 years. At a cost of just $50.00 per year per member that would cost $120,000,000 • Reputation/ Trust cost $TO HIGH.00 • How Would I Feel If This Was My Information?

Public Perception • Isn’t it true, the EHR is just another way for the Federal Government to track me? • HIPAA “laws” were only created to make it hard to obtain my own records • I have bills from hospital & physician offices I’ve never been, what is up with that? • I have friends and neighbors that work at that hospital, is my information really private and protected? • Are healthcare workers all stupid or lazy? They ask the same questions 101 times, what is your name? What is your DOB? What gives??? • How can you charge me so much for my medical records, I thought they were my records? • Medical Identity theft what is it and how does it impact me?
