Es scheint angemessen, den Mechanismus des Phonem-Auszugs als „categorical perception of speech“ zu benennen. • Der Term der CP steht inzwischen gewöhnlich anstelle der experimentellen Methode. • Das Ziel dieses Werks ist es, zu untersuchen, ob die Methode der CP irgend etwas mit dem Mechanismus der Kategorisierung zu tun hat.

Definition der CP von LIBERMAN et al., 1957: „Diskrimination should be completely determined by categorization.“ „Perception is fully categorical only if there is no significant difference between phoneme categorization and discrimination. If this criterion is not met, CP is incomplete.“

Trotz günstigen Anfangs mit klarer Definition bleibt die CP ein schlecht definiertes oder gar undefiniertes Konzept, welches benutzt werden kann, um andere exklusiveAnsprüche zu unterstreichen, zum Beispiel: Für oder gegen: - Motortheorie (Lane, 1965) - Special speech mode of perception (Schouten, 1980).

  10. FOLGERUNGEN DER AUTOREN Der Grad der CP hängt von mehr Faktoren ab, als bislang nachgewiesen wurde. Die traditionellen Exp. beeinflussen die Antwort-tendenz (bias), dies führt zur systematischen Veränderung der Antwortwahrscheinlichkeit.> Diskriminations-Task: Wenn der Hörer nicht voreingenommen ist, findet KEINE CP statt. > Je natürlicher die Stimuli, desto höher die CP (Plosive höher als Vokale). > ISI spielt für die CP keine große Rolle.
