  2. Administrative Details (1) Instructor:  Martin Savage, savage@phys.washington.edu Lectures: MWF 2:30 - 3:20 AM,  A118 Physics-Astronomy Building Tutorials: Tutorials start the 2nd week of the quarter.  Attendance is mandatory; locations and times of individual sections are listed in the Time Schedule.  You must be present at the first tutorial meeting or you may be dropped from the course.  If you are not yet enrolled, go to any tutorial section that is associated with your lecture section.  If there is space, you can do the first tutorial and get into the section; if not, try another section. Laboratory (Physics 122Zx):Labs start the 2nd week of the quarter.  You must take the laboratory part of the course, Physics 122Zx, simultaneously with this course.  You must be present at the first laboratory meeting or you may be dropped from this course.  If you are not yet enrolled, go to any lab section.  If there is space, you can do the first experiment and get into the lab; if not, try another section.  The instructor for the laboratory course is listed below. Purchase Lab Manual (see next) during the 1st week and before your first lab meeting. Office Hours: • Prof. Martin Savage (Lecture) Mondays and Wednesday, TBA in Study Center (AM018) or by appointment, Office: B451 Physics Astronomy Building • Prof. P. S. Shaffer (Tutorials) by appointment, shaffer@phys.washington.eduOffice: C208 Physics Astronomy Building • Prof. Hamish Robertson (Laboratory) by appointment,  rghr@u.washington.eduOffice: B476 Physics Astronomy Building Physics 122B - Admin. 3. Administrative Details (2) Textbooks: • Randall D. Knight, Physics for Scientists and Engineers:  A Strategic Approach, Pearson Addison-Wesley (2004), ISBN 0-8053-8960-1 • L. McDermott and P. Shaffer, et. al., Tutorials in Introductory Physics • The Physics 122Z Lab Manual may be purchased at the University Bookstore. Purchase this during the 1st week and before your first lab meeting. Lectures: Lectures will be given using PowerPoint. Lecture .ppt files are available through links for individual lectures. StudyCenter:Teaching assistants will be available for consultation in the Physics Study Center located in Room AM018.  (To reach the Physics Study Center, go down the stairs that circle around the Foucault pendulum and proceed toward the end of the hall.)  The Study Center is staffed from approximately 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on weekdays. This is the first place you go to for help with physics. WeeklyPretests:There will be weekly pretests conducted as part of the Tutorial using the Tycho system. Pretests will not be graded.  Completion of these tests, however, will be a factor in determining your final grade. Class Interactions: We will be using the HIT-T response system correlated with the lectures, which also records attendance. I have not yet decided how much this will be used. Physics 122B - Admin. 4. Administrative Details (3) Course Schedule: The lecture schedule for Physics 122B is on the web. This contains a list of lectures (with links), tutorials and labs, and shows holidays and the final exam schedule. Course Syllabus: The Syllabus for Physics 122B is on the web. You should read this web page carefully for detailed information about the course and grading policies. Exams: There will be three one-hour midterm exams and a two-hour final exam.  Approximately half of each exam will be based on material emphasized in the tutorials and in the laboratory.  The midterm exams will cover the material as shown in the Syllabus.  The final exam will be comprehensive.  All exams will be closed book with one sheet of notes allowed.  There will be NO make-up exams. Homework: • Lecture homework is submitted on the Tycho system and is due at 11:59 PM (Midnight) on Fridays. • Tutorial homework will be assigned and collected in each tutorial section. One problem from each assignment will be graded in detail, and will contribute to your score for tutorials. CourseGrade: You will receive a single grade for Physics 122B covering the lecture, tutorial, and laboratory.  Physics 122B - Admin. Details

  5. Administrative Details (4) Tycho Information • The Physics 122B Class List of registered students will be uploaded to Tycho every day during Week 1. The names of late-registering students will require one day to show up on Tycho. • Non-Matriculated students should see Laura Clement, Room C136 PAB, immediately. They can anticipate Tycho registration problems. • The Tycho URL is: http://tychosrv.phys.washington.edu/courses/Phys122/spring07 • Logging onto Tycho:Your “name” is the first part of your UW email address;Your initial “password” is the last 4 digits of your UW student ID number. 6. Administrative Details (5) Clicker Information • Physics 122B will use a “clicker” that can be purchased at the University Bookstore. If your clicker does not function, check the batteries and/or see the Bookstore. • There is a link from the course syllabus to the clicker registration page. Go there and register your clicker, giving your name, UW Net ID (NOT UW Student ID) , clicker ID (found inside the battery compartment), and a 3-letter screen name (capital letters or numbers only, no symbols). • Your clicker must be registered by the end of the quarter to receive credit for class participation. You may receive an increment of up to 0.1 grade points for your clicker participation in class. Physics 122B - Admin. Details

  7. Administrative Details (6)Labs • Prof Hamish Robertson • PAB B476, 6-2745 • rghr@u.washington.edu • http://faculty.washington..edu/rghr/course2.htm • Labs start Tuesday, April 3, Room B176 • Lab course packets available at the University Book Store, about $7. • 8 experiments on EM and circuits • Makeup week is May 29-June 1 • Grade is 15% of course grade. Must do 6 labs to avoid 0.0 on COURSE. 3 labs (TBA) are graded C/NC, 5 are numerically graded Physics 122B - Admin. Details
