  4. What if You Didn’t Have the Vehicle For the Full Year? If you didn’t have the vehicle for a full year, your payment is less. To know what to pay, exactly, your payment is determined by which month you purchased or began operating the vehicle. If you operated in July or have been operating it annually, your due date for 2013 is September 3rd. From this point, every month you start operating the vehicle, you must file the IRS form 2290 by the end of the next month. For example, if you start operating the vehicle in October of 2013, you should file by the end of November 2013. What with the Thanksgiving holiday, the due date, then, would be December 2nd. For a full list of months and due dates, you can consult the instructions page of the 2290 page.

  5. What if You Are Filing For 25 or More Vehicles? If you have 25 or more heavy highway vehicles, the IRS encourages you to eFile. By eFiling, you’re cutting back on the amount of paperwork that you would otherwise be printing and filing. If you’re eFiling, you should be paying with electronic funds withdrawal, which is a direct debit.

  6. Should You Pay When You File? The IRS form 2290 is not something to take lightly, especially if you are putting 25 or more vehicles on the road. If you’ve recently acquired a vehicle or if you have only recently employed it for your service, you are not required to pay until the end of the following month from when you employed it. If you’ve been running your vehicles for a full year or have started in July of 2013, you don’t need to file until September 3rd, 2013. The IRS expects you to pay when you file. If you are eFiling, you pay with an electronic funds withdrawal. If you are filing by paper, you send a check or money order using Form 2290-V sent to Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 804525, Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525.
