Then, turn it in on the stool.  Think, pair, share… • What do most hero movies have in common? • What do all heroes go through? • What traits do all heroes share? • What similar characters are in the stories? • What common events occur in hero movies?

  2. FILM STUDIESMARCH 6, 2012 Staple your rubric/prompt to the front of your essay. Then, turn it in on the stool.  FUN OPTION! In groups of 5, create your own hero movie! Find out what characters you need to have, give everyone a part, find out who needs to do what, say what until the plot runs its course to the end! Each movie should be 1 minute and each character has to identify his/herself (nametags or by stating his/her name/part upon entering the scene)

  5. HEROES EPIC JOURNEY NOTES The hero’s epic journey involves archetypes. Archetype= a “universal” symbol; a symbol which occurs in various cultures. An example of an archetype is the cycle of the seasons: • Considering what happens in each season, what do you think spring represents across cultures? How about winter? Summer? Fall?

HEROES EPIC JOURNEY NOTES In hero stories, we see the following archetypal characters: • The hero • Stereotyped as intelligent, capable, humble, sacrificial • The heroine • Stereotyped as the “damsel in distress”, desirable • The villain • Stereotyped as pure evil, scheming, stoic • The sidekick • Stereotyped as loyal, not as smart as hero • The sage • Stereotyped as old, wise, fatherly, caring

  7. HEROES EPIC JOURNEY NOTES In hero stories, we also see the archetypal struggle between good and evil. It is usually portrayed visually through archetypal contrasts such as: • Light and dark (light symbolizes goodness/ dark symbolizes evil) • Day and night (day symbolizes purity/ night symbolizes evil) • White and black (white clothes symbolize purity/ black clothes symbolizes evil)

  8. HEROES EPIC JOURNEY NOTES Not only are there archetypal images and characters in hero stories, but the hero’s story itself is an archetype. Every hero story follows certain events that, in total symbolize the struggle between good and evil.

  9. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • Three stages of Hero’s Journey : 1. Separation= Hero leaves his home. 2. Initiation= Hero endures many trials. 3. Return= Hero returns home.

  10. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • SEPARATION • Part I: The Call to Adventure= The person is first given notice that everything is going to change, whether they know it or not.

  11. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • SEPARATION • Part II: Refusal of the Call= The future hero often refuses to pay attention to his/her calling. This may be from a sense of duty, fear, insecurity, a concern of his/her shortfalls, etc.

  12. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • SEPARATION • Part III: Supernatural Aid= Once the hero has committed to the quest, consciously or unconsciously, his or her guide or magical helper appears.

  13. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • SEPARATION • Part IV: Crossing of the First Threshold= The person crosses into adventure, leaving the limits of his or her world and entering into dangerous territory where rules and limits are unknown.

  14. THE HERO’S JOURNEY • SEPARATION • Part V: The Belly of the Whale= The hero is transitioning between worlds and selves. Experiences that will shape the new world and self will begin soon. It’s often symbolized by something dark, unknown and frightening. The person shows their willingness to undergo a change.
