  3. Introduction In 1996, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) set up the emergency response units (ERUs), which have responded to the needs of the vulnerable in major disasters. ERUs are part of IFRC disaster response tools. They provide specific support or direct service when local facilities are either destroyed, overwhelmed by needs, or do not exist. Using a standardized modular system of equipment and pre-trained teams of National Society technical specialists ERUs can be deployed within 48 to 72 hours.

  4. Types of ERUs • Basic Health Care • Referral Hospital (field hospital) • Water and Sanitation. Specialized Water Module 15 • Water and Sanitation. Mass Water Module 40 • Water and Sanitation. Mass Sanitation Module 20 • Telecommunications • Logistics • Relief

  5. Watsan Mod. 15 Aim To supply safe water in emergency situations to health care facilities and the population up to a maximum of 15.000 people when the local facilities are nor sufficient or have been destroyed. The unit can also provide basic sanitation.

  6. Watsan Mod. 15 Capabilities • To provide water treatment and distribution up to 225,000 litres a day for a population of 15,000 people, with a storage capacity of a maximum • of 200,000 litres a day. • This unit can also provide basic sanitation for up to 5,000 people. • The module is designed for response to scattered populations, with a flexible approach due to a number of smaller treatment units, which can be split and set up as stand-alone units in different locations. • Availability of local water sources is required. • Integrated in the Water and Sanitation Module 15 is distribution and • trucking capacity, for transport of treated water to dispersed populations, • capacity of up to 75,000 litres a day, with possibility to set up nine • different storage and distribution points (preconditions are availability of • flatbed trucks, fuel, road access). • Approximate weight: 20 MT, volume: 75m3.

  8. Watsan Mod. 15 Deployment capability • 5 lines of specialized water production: up to 45.000 litres/day and chemicals for 3 months (1 WTP/Line). • 1-5 lines of mass water production: up to 600.000 litres/day and chemicals for 1 month. • 50 latrines to be built immediately. Capacity to build more latrines. • Equipment for the living area for expatriates and local staff. • Laboratory. • Workshop. • Vehicles for 10 people. • Communication equipment
